how often do you give your dogs a bath?

Hi! DH & I were chatting tonite, he says he remembers that when we were in obedience school, the trainer said not to give more than two baths a month ... I thought it was more like only one a week.

LOLOL! I meant to say, when the puppies were in obedience school! Not us ...

depends on the weather.....................if it's summer & it's rather warm then we will bath our baby weekly, but in Winter it's usually every 2-3 weeks.

I give my puppy a bath atleast once a week. Sometimes the little mischievious thing needs one more often than that. When we first got him, he had a thing about escaping and mud puddles. It rained a lot when we first got him, and he was so tiny, he'd be covered in muddy water all the way up to his shoulders. Since he sleeps with me, he HAD to have a bath. He HATES baths. It takes him an hour or so to forgive me for torturing him. He had a bath this morning. I'd love to know why something so tiny (he's about 6-7 pounds now) can make such a huge mess when he's taking a bath. I always get soaked and have to take a shower after he takes a bath.

I don't attempt to bathe our Maltese so she goes to the beauty shop about once every 6 weeks. Our new Schnauzer however is getting a bath about every 2-3 weeks and so far that's working well. She's about ready for a trim now too.

LOL Browneyes ~ Yes! Our oldest dog (jack russell) HATES us both when she is finished with her bath. And we have to trick her into it...we have to close off the rest of the house or she would hide under the bed!

I have this big old St. Bernard, about 180 lbs., that thinks the swamp on the other side of the fence is her pool! We call her "Houdini" for short. We have shored the fence up, put wood against it, covered her holes and viola still she gets out! Now mind you the kiddie pool that we put out back for her enjoyment she is petrified of and uses that as her water dish most of the summer! So on her swamp days she gets bathed, but mostly not too often she is just too darn big and is terrified of the water lol!

I have a question for those of you who are bathing your dogs so often. Do they have itchy skin and allergy problems?

Some of the wire coated terrier breeds should NOT be bathed much. It takes away the natural oils in their skin and hair coat, and leaves their skin defensless agains skin infections. As a dog groomer, I see a lot of dogs who suffer from over bathing. Dogs are not like humans. They need those oils in their skin to protect them. That being said, there are some breeds that DO need regular bathing. The non-shedding continuously growing hair kind like poodles, Bichons, etc, need to be bathed regularily.

Our golden retreiver gets only about 4-6 baths per year. Those only when he has found something really "ripe" to roll around in. He gets regular brushings as least weekly and usually more often. He has never had skin problems but our neighbor's golden does. I agree, people seem to bath more often than needed. Of course, my dog is too big to sleep with me but if he did I might insist he bath more often.

Our dog Pooh (a keeshond) has bad skin problems so we can't bathe her that often, only about 3-4 times a year.

Her son Scooby is a big monster when it comes to getting a bath, so he gets about 2-3 a year. Not counting the times when he gets into something and we HAVE to give him one.

My Scooter had skin problems and I was told by the vet to bathe him once a week with a special shampoo.

My dalmatian could probably go about 6 months without a bath. He never smells "doggy". He sheds all year, blowing his coat in spring and fall.

My mini-dachshund is mostly an indoor dog, except for leashed walks. With the air conditioning in summer and warm heat all winter, she really doesn't get sweaty or smelly. I give her a bath about every 2 months.

Probably 4-6 times per year. I usually bathe Ted before we are going on vacation, because my parents watch him at their house and I don't want him to smell doggy. In between, I use those little doggie bath wipes to freshen him up.
