How often are "Classics" re-released from the vault?

Sorry if this doesn't belong on the Rumors and News board, didn't know where else to put it.

Anyone know how often Disney releases movies? I've been waiting for Snow White and Fantasia on DVD. I know that 101 Dalmations just came out again last Tuesday, and Disney is re-releasing Sleeping Beauty this fall, even though it was out in 2003.

Any rhyme or reason to how Disney decides to do this?

Thanks for any information!:thumbsup2

Used to be, before home video, they did theatrical re-releases every 7 years.. fresh crop of kids = fresh audience.

Now a days.. they seem to re-release to home video on a 4 year schedule.. punctuated by the odd 'whenever we feel like it' release. ;)

I am just guessing here but I would think we will see more releases with the blu ray market. Sleeping Beauty will be coming to blu ray in Oct and if the sales are good I would think they would keep that up.

The official word that I have heard about it: A couple of years ago, Disney created the Platinum collection: 10 movies (Classics) they considered their best. I know Snow White is part of it, it was the first one that was released in the Platinum 2-disc DVD set, not too sure about it.
As it was told to the press then, every year 1 Platinum edition would be released, so every 10 years you would get the chance to buy the movies. As I experience now, they release 2 Platinum movies a year.

The other ones: no clue, depending on how they feel like it? I have the impression many movies are on sale constantly over here.

Movies I can think of that are Platinum:
- Snow White
- Cinderella
- Aladdin
- 101 Dalmatians
- Jungle Book
- Beauty and the Beast
- Little mermaid
- Bambi
- Lady and the Tramp
- and 1 more.

OK, I just googled it, and found a Dutch website (http://disneyclassics.mysites.nl/mypages/disneyclassics/291994.html)

They say there are 14 movies, one being released every 6 months, so it's a 7-year cycle.

Thanks so much for the information - now just to pay attention to the new releases, and figure out what I "need". :)

Thank you so much for posting this. DF and I are trying to build up our Disney Movie collection for the new house and we are having a hard time trying to find Fantasia and Beauty and the Beast-- guess we have a long time to wait. :(

About 12 years ago, when all our movies were still VHS, our house was broken into. They took quite a bit of my jewelry, a few of dh's tools, all my Disney movies except Fantasia, and a pillow case from the guest room, presumably to carry off the loot. :rotfl2: It was right before Christmas, so we figured the thieves were "shopping." I guess they didn't care for the Sorcerer's Apprentice and dancing hippos.

Have you checked eBay for the ones you want?

i don't remember many of the re releases, just bambi, lady and the tramp and peter pan. think little mermaid got rereleased, not sure

 That's terrible!!! I think I would've been most disappointed about the stolen movies. Haha, I guess they didn't appreciate the art of Fantasia. We haven't checked eBay but we have checked Amazon and we can't find Beauty and the Beast for anything less than $50 :scared1: . If we MUST buy it for $50 we will, but ugh, it's not something we want to drop 50 bucks on despite my love for B&TB.

Whenever I evacuate for a hurricane, I take only the valuables - family pics and Disney DVDs & tapes! Everything else can be replaced! :lmao:

I can't wait for Beauty & The Beast. Last time wasn't there three versions on the dvd including a recording of the broadway show? I wanted it so badly and I hate that I can't find it.

Someone asked if Little Mermaid is on dvd...Yes! I don't know if its still for sale but it was recently on dvd and I bought it to console myself over the lack of beauty & the beast.

I understand what you mean. B&B and Silly Symphonies are ridiculously expensive. Recently I found B&B for $20 through half.com. There was no picture and I had no real idea what I was getting. I could have contacted the seller, but I was going away for the weekend and didn't want to miss out on buying it while waiting for the seller to respond to an email. It was the platinum dvd and brand new. It was the Canadian version and probably "fell off a truck" somewhere, but I now can watch it! I tried to get it legitimately through the public library but people kept stealing copies before I could watch one!

I did bite the bullet with the silly symphonies. I had a $25 gift certificate for Amazon. With the gc I only had to pay $20 for it. I paid waaaaay too much for the dvd, but I love those classic cartoons.

Moral of the story: Pay attention to the DVD release schedule.

I am not a big Peter Pan and Jungle Book fan, but I keep wondering, "Will I want to watch these DVDs 1 year from now?"

Thats great you got B&TB!! And too true about Peter Pan and Jungle Book. I'm especially not a fan of Jungle Book but I'm worried that in a few years I'll want to watch it, show it to my kids, or just have the peace of mind knowing that I own a Disney classic. I'm difficult. :goodvibes

:scared1: I may have to wait 3 more years to get B&tB?!?! My favorite movie, been looking for it everywhere, just began "collecting" all the Disney DVDs, and I can be looking at 3 yrs?
Oh boy.. I need a bowl of ice cream.

Ever notice that there are some that never seem to get released??... ..like Song of the South- I guess Disney thought it was ok to use for the theme of Splash Mountain, but never intends to release it on DVD/video. I don't get it. I love that movie and managed to get myself a copy form England. I know it involves some questionable times in our history, but cetainly no worse than Gone with the Wind. My kids really like it and it makes Splash Mountain make a lot more sense to them.

Disney can't re-release Song of the south at the moment. The NAACP practically/officially (can't remember) banned it as they feel it is racist in nature. I always thought that Uncle Remus was the smart one so I don't get why there is the objection :confused3 but as it stands right now they won't release it. They even withdrew it from sale in the UK MANY years ago. They keep coming back to a question of release but until they feel the demand outweighs the negative pr it might obtain they won't do it.

Other films always have odd release issues. I know one US release (Think it's melody time off the top of my head) can't be released in the UK because of a copyright issue with one of the songs.
