I'm having my son's 1st b-day a Mickey Mouse theme. I need a cake to feed about 40 adults. Cupcakes for the kids.........

I gave someone who does cakes on the side a picture of the cake below as an example.

She quoted me less than a bakery I called, but I still want to make sure I'm getting a good price.

So, how much do you think I should pay for a cake similar to this? Smash cake included.

One layer will be white, one layer chocolate. She also said, "I prefer to do most of my cakes in butter cream with Fondant accents (so you can consume more of the cake). Fondant can get hard – it looks great but dries out quickly. I can also do all fondant of you would prefer but cost would go up from what I have quoted below. " So, the cake in the picture below would be more butter cream, less Fondant.

I dont know, but I love it!

I am a cake decorator, and in my area, I would charge 2.75 per serving for that, free smash cake.

I also do cakes on the side, and I charge $3/serving for buttercream, and provide the smash cake free.

So for 40 servings, I'd charge a minimum of $120.

I just got a price from a bakery near me - similar in size, fondant, but Star Wars rather than Mickey. $125 for one tier (feeds 20) and $150 for two tier (feeds $30.)

I've been decorating cakes for about 6 years now and for something like that I would probably charge $75 but I'm very, very cheap. An actual licensed bakery would most likely charge around $150 for it depending on the fondant. The blue part is the only part I could see as being buttercream. Fondant can also be pulled off if you don't want to eat it. There's buttercream underneath. I personally love the way fondant looks and I hate it when people shy away from it because of the chewy texture.

If you want it smooth like the icing in the picture it is going to be very difficult with just butter cream too.

a little off topic, but i use the marshmallow fondant, and it actually tastes good. Like circus peanuts candy. lol I would love love love to see what your cake looks like when you get it! The cake is really cute.

I bake cakes for a living and I'd charge around $150 for the cake (40 servings) plus smash cake. I only use fondant though so I don't know how much I'd discount it for buttercream.

What I would suggest though is looking at photos of her other cakes (if you haven't already done so) because unless she can get her buttercream *very* smooth, it will look quite different to what is in the photo. Many people can do this, but many others can't and I've seen (on a cake forum) lots of disappointed customers when they've ordered a buttercream with fondant accents version of a fondant cake.

Great! It looks like I'm getting a great price.

She is charging me $70 for both cakes. I told her the cake needs to feed 40 people.

I can't remember exactly what the bakery was quoting me, but I know it was over $100 for the Mickey cake & $8 for the smash cake.

However, like I said, it is not going to be all Fondant like the picture. So, I'm sure it will look much different than the picture. She told me she could use all Fondant, but the cost would go up.

I told her i'm not real picky. I just want a cute Mickey cake. Plus, she's local and a good friend of my Mom's cousin. So, I figure I'm helping her business out too. That picture was just to give her an idea. I saw some of her cakes on her website and it looks like she does a great job, so I'm not worried.

I'll definitely post pics once it's complete. The party is not until the 22nd so I'll come back and post some pictures then.

Thanks for the replies. I had no idea if this was a good price or not.

$150 for butter cream but I do not think design can work without fondant, too many details for butter cream, it will be a mess.
Love the cake, btw.

I used to decorate cakes and I would say $100 to $125 sounds reasonable.

At least 150. I paid $120 for 3/4 sheet cake for my daughter's birthday from our local bakery. It had three colors and was filled half chocolate and half strawberry. It was cute but not as cute as that. I really wanted something like that, but the expert cake decorator was on vacation the week of dd's birthday. It was do a sheet cake or go with another bakery. Although the bakery I used is expensive, the cake is YUMMY.

I also bake cakes and that cake would be $150. The cake would be all fondant though to get a nice smooth look. I only use MMF and it tastes pretty good.

Funny I'm in Australia and those cakes would cost well over $200.

Hope you have a great experience :)
