How much will I regret moving my trip from Mid- May to early June?

Hey Gang,

Long time DL guest, occasional WDW guest. DL is like home, WDW is like visiting relatives you don't see very often. Fun but a little overwhelming and not sure what to do. LOL

Anyway, my oldest has decided to take a short summer class at college, thus pushing our planned trip back from May 15th to June 2nd. (6 days in the parks). I'm trying to tell myself that it would be hot either way (we are from Alaska and don't love the summer heat). Sadly, getting to Florida for us is an ordeal and going in the winter just hasn't timed out well for us and we are tired of waiting.

I've done DL in June and it was hot but OK, July but it was hot and terrible (still fun!). Is the difference in weather in Orlando between mid-may and early June worth agonizing over? Are crowds going to be dramatically worse?

Sorry about all the whining. I'm a solo parent planning a trip with teens so it's all on me.

TIA.

I’d been to WDW May and June many times - lately, June has had better weather and was less crowded…I think you’ll be fine.

We like going in May as well. Weather wise a couple of weeks won't make a huge difference but the airfare and hotel rates could be a larger variance depending on where you're flying from. For us, if we can't go in May, we will wait until at least Fall.

I say if there aren't a significant difference for those two, beginning June wouldn't be too bad. Definitely way better than late June - August.

We've done WDW in June - it can get hot and crowded... but we've got another WDW trip this June, because it can't get too hot or crowded to keep us away! The difference in crowd sizes correlates with the end of the school year. Cooling towels help. We always look for shady areas out of the way of popular travel routes to stop and have a break from the heat and crowds. Indoor shows and attractions make for a great respite from the heat, albeit potentially crowed. Make time for short breaks when you can and stay hydrated. It's the most magical place on earth - couldn't be that bad! °o°

Right? A bad day at Disney is still better than most days anywhere else. I just needed reassurance......

It's always crowded as Disney now a days. Doubt it will even make a difference. I have had days where I expected major crowds with holidays, and it was light. And vice versa

I think that's true to a certain extent. We were there first week of March and it was significantly better than the rest of the month. It was still busy but not horrible and we could definitely tell the difference between beginning of the week vs end of the week when we were leaving. For our trip and experience, the crowd calendar was still pretty accurate because it says first week of March is less crowded. Of course, like you said some holidays for some odd reasons, I have also seen bloggers reported parks aren't that crowded and wait times aren't as horrible as anticipated. I guess regardless, we just need to pack our patience with us! 😂

June might be less crowded than June, but I would expect it to be warmer. And the last few times we were there in May was Hot!

So we go a good bit over the summer and outside of July 4th and a few times around memorial day, it's very tolerable crowd wise especially compared to Fall/Christmas, spring break and February. We've gone the last several years right after Memorial Day into early June since our kids get out of school early and it's never been that bad and lower crowds from other times of the year. Still crowded but nothing outside of the oridinary.

It will be warm, likely feel really hot to you being from AK, but it's not like May is cool so it's really a moot point weather wise if you're coming from a cold state. Averages will be low 90s/high 80s but shouldn't be peak humidity as it gets to be in July-September. DL is not the same heat wise as WDW given FL is so much more humid. It will definitely feel hotter than CA unless you experienced some rogue heat wave. Plan to hit the parks early, take midday/late afternoon breaks and return later in the evening if the heat gets to you. Try to make a late lunch ADR indoors to guarantee yourself some AC, take lots of breaks, hydrate, wear a hat/sunscreen and try using a cooling towel around your neck and maybe grab a portable fan. If I had to pick a summer time to visit, early June is always our preferred time for crowds and weather. When you start bumping into late July/early August, you get more tropical depressions and a lot more rain.

My birthday falls on/around Memorial Day so I go most often during that week into the first week of June and tbh it’s my favorite time to go besides fall. While it’s hot it’s not unbearable like August can get, you don’t get the wild swings in temps that happen in early spring/winter, and evenings are very pleasant.

Early-mid May is still best imo because crowds are lower due to kids being in school, but I don’t find them to be all that onerous at the end of the month. Memorial Day itself can be ugly (I don’t put stock in crowd calendars at all but just for context, Touring Plans has it as a 10 for HS this year). But it’s still very doable with a smart plan. And once you get over that hump the rest of the week really is not bad. Summer crowds have not arrived in earnest once you get past the holiday (NYC schools don’t get out until almost the end of June). I love going during that time of year.

I will say Memorial Day week back in 2021 was the least crowded I have ever seen the parks in my life though. I’m sure it was a Covid era fluke but it was a dream.

Following...we might move our May 14-20 trip to first week of June. We were supposed to go in April and our kid got sick. At this rate I'm tempted to just wait until schools out...how much hotter and crowded can it be?

It will be hot but 2 weeks later won’t be a huge difference. I live 6 hours north and it was 87 yesterday. Even at midnight last night it was 74. May/June heat is very similar.

The first week of June really isn’t terrible. I go a lot during that time because my birthday falls around Memorial Day, and tbh while it’s hot it’s not nearly as humid as in August and I find it tolerable with mitigation strategies. Crowds are only really bad around Memorial Day weekend, after that it tapers off. 2021 was dead that week actually.

Would you sat mid may is just ashot?

The only weather issue you might run into in June is a higher chance of the afternoon downpours, but early June is still a little soon for that to happen with any regularity - got to really get into the oppressive humidity of summer for those. Regardless, if you do get some of the pop-ups, they are generally fleeting and won’t ruin your days. If you’re prepared with the proper footwear and ponchos, you may even get the parks to yourselves for a few blissful moments! I think you will be fine. Have a great time!

Yes definitely pack rain gear. They don’t happen like clockwork the way they do in July/August but they definitely happen. Once in a while you might still get the ones that don’t blow in and out. On my last trip in early June 21 there was light rain at HS when I was ready for my afternoon break around 1p, I got on the boat back to YC but we turned around and went back to the dock halfway to Swan and Dolphin due to lightning. I would have just walked back but was laden with shopping bags and a droid so went to get a bus back and the sky opened up while waiting. It didn’t let up until almost 6p. But that’s pretty rare.
