I've been reading some of the trip reports. It seems that eating is a major part of cruising.

So out of curiosity, How much did you gain on your cruise?

I typically lose a pound or two. I eat right on the cruise (no fried or junk food) and I walk a lot.

MUN

Of all the cruises we have taken so far; the most weight I have gained on one cruise is 5 pounds. This was the last cruise, the Disney Fantasy over Christmas 2014. Before this I think 3 pounds is the most I have gained. And we have taken a 15 night west bound Panama Canal cruise on the Disney Wonder back in 2011.

None. In fact, I ate healthier food at regular hours and wasn't hungry for snacks. At home I usually eat a lot of junk food and never eat at the same hours and eat a lot of unhealthy snacks.

I have to agree, we tend to actually eat better on the ship than at home. The food portions aren't huge and you don't have to have everything offered at dinner. We are much more active on the ship than at home as well, so we have not really experienced a true weight gain while cruising. We don't drink alcohol, so we don't have those added calories. Our biggest splurge is the late night pizza from Pinocchio's...sooo good.

I gained 5, dh gained 9. The trip also included a day at WDW, Ghiradelli ice cream :lovestruc, at the beginning and end of the cruise. He lost all but 1 pound within a week, me too.

Gain 3-5lbs. Eat way more than usual and drink a lot!!! I do walk a lot but it's no way near what I do for exercise at home. But that's what vacation is all about :)

We've pretty much stayed even when on a cruise. The important thing to remember is that you don't have to clean your plate at every meal. You don't get graded on how much you leave behind. So, don't be afraid to try different foods just to see if you like them, and don't be afraid to ask for extra desserts. Just don't eat it all. :)

Oh, and be sure to keep up your exercise regime while on board. Try to maintain the same level of activity as at home. Walk around the ship. Do some walking/swimming in the ports.

I didn't gain any weight while on our 5 night cruise. I think all the walking we did counteracted that damage the delicious food could have caused.

First few cruises, I gained a pound every 2 or 3 days. Since then, I have managed to maintain or lose weight by following some guidelines:

1. Make some good choices at the MDRs. Note that I said "some," not "only." So one night I might choose a high calorie appetizer, but the next two nights I might go for a salad and minimal dressing. It helps a lot that I have tried most of the items, so I don't feel the need to try everything now.

2. Decrease the snacking / trips to the quick service dining spots. Also, when I go there, I ask them to only give me a half order of fries. At first, I thought they gave me a full order. Later, I ordered a full order and discovered they had been giving me the half order I requested! That's a lot of fries. Of course, cutting the fries by half only works if you don't double the number of times you go there.

3. Must do an hour of cardio at the fitness center on any sea day.

4. Only allowed to use the stairs on any sea day.

5. Be active when in port: walk places, discover things.

First cruise: 4 days, 6 lbs. Lost it again fairly quickly. Since then, we're either on cruises where there's a lot of walking because of the ports or we go to the gym in the morning. We eat (and drink) much more than usual when we're on board, but if you take the stairs, go to the gym or do a lot of walking in the ports you can either come back even or at a loss. Also, just because there's lots of food it doesn't mean that you have to eat unhealthy. You can still eat lots but healthy stuff.

Love that Disney had fruit as the first offering at their buffets! Honestly, I always took some and it helped me eat less of the fattening stuff. Have to say, did not eat as much as I expected on our cruise (Wonder) a few weeks ago. The food was really just mediocre.

Now, WDW, that is a different story! Always gain a few pounds (the fudge, mickey bars, cupcakes, popcorn, dole whips, omg - I could go on an on!)

My cruise is in August so I started watching every bite that goes in my mouth since February. Gave up soda and started eating very healthy - low carbs, healthy proteins. Dropping the weight now so I can indulge without the guilt on our cruise!
Last cruise I did the same and only gained 2 lbs. Stairs were my best friend and walks around Deck 4 were wonderful.

I gained 5 pounds on my first cruise. It was 5 days. I ate everything I wanted to eat.

My last cruise was 7 days and I gained 3 pounds. I still ate everything I wanted to eat. But I had a rule that I had to take the stairs, even when we came back from excursions and it was 6 flights up. I think that really helped. I lost the 3 pounds within a few days of getting home too so I think it was mostly just water retention from eating more salty foods.

I don't really believe in worrying about it. It's a vacation and I'm going to enjoy myself.

I usually had a veggie burger for lunch, ate off the lighter fare menu (usually fish of some sort), and only drank water except for a couple glasses of wine one day, plus worked out for about 2 hours in the gym every afternoon... and I gained 5 lbs!

Remember, a lot of weight gained on these cruises, and other vacations, is very likely sodium-induced water weight. That's why it's so easy to lose it for most people after they get off of the boat. My feet swell up like toads every time I cruise, and they aren't much better when I go on vacation or on a junk bender over a weekend. The high sodium in everything kills me. When I get back on the lower sodium diet any gain I had tends to fall right off. I don't know *how* I managed to lose weight on the last cruise considering how much I ate and drank, but I did. Go figure.

I always lose weight on any vacation. I run every day at home and on a vacation.... so my workouts stay the same. I'm just more active on vacation. I don't spend my free time sitting on my*#$% posting on the dis boards. :)

  • Main dining vs the bottomless buffet makes a huge difference. I say go to main dining and then reload in the buffet to help with the daily "extra-sizing".
  • on one ship tour of the fitness centre, they say the average cruiser gains 1 lb a day
  • I now carry a fitbit to ensure I get my 10,000 daily steps. Otherwise it's laps around the decks!
