How much TV time?

How much TV time do your kids get during the day?

I'm trying to limit my 4 & 7 yo ds's to 5 shows a day. That's 2 1/2 hours total.

During the summer, my kids (both age 7) watch one to two hours a day. During the winter they watch more, a half-hour before school, a half-hour after school, and maybe two hours after homework.

Never mind the kids. I'm the one with the problem. Dr. Phil, Oprah, Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown, Millionaire, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Everybody Loves Raymond. And that only get me to 8:00 p.m.

Depends on their mood and the weather. We try to get them outside when it isn't way to humid. In the evenings I usually allow them one video, other than that they play on the computer or find a quiet activity to play:rolleyes: ...they think they are playing a quiet activity. Not sure about the day time....you would need to ask Shep that question. Some nights the television doesn't even come on.

During the whole school year - our kids are not allowed to use the TV, Playstation, Gameboys, or computer for games/internet at all during the week. They can of course use the computer for anything regarding homework.

They are allowed to watch whatever appropriate shows they want on the weekends.

During school vacations - I monitor the use also, but if it's a day like today (rainy and no other kids around to play with) I let them. If it's a gorgeous day - I send them out, or take them to the beach.

I've always played it by ear. When DD was little, she would watch alot of Nick, Jr. and PBS. All really good shows. But she also had alot of playtime and park time and preschool, etc. So it never seemed excessive.

Now, as a teenager, she has days where all she does is park herself in front of the TV, and other days she never even turns it on. She reads alot of books, goes out with friends, so it balances out. My biggest problem is the internet. If only ALL the kids would have their computers taken away, maybe AOL's instant messenger would die a quick death.:p

The girls don't usually watch TV...
If they aren't on the game cube, computer or outside they might watch a tape but manage to entertain themselves without the TV...except when DW's home...:jester: then they torment her..

I really try to limit to 1 hour per day. However, some days it may be a little more, like today they agreed on a movie so thats on top of the tv. If it were up to my DH we wouldn't even own a tv! He really is against it. We went out last monthe to buy a new minivan and the one I picked had a DVD in it and he refused:mad:
So we bought the same model without one that cost more

Its so much easier in the summer when we are at the beach club all day.

But I am proud to say my 18mo has never watched TV!

As a general rule DS (7) is allowed 3 half h our shows a day or an hour and a half in videos or Nintendo. If there is bad weather and no school than that is a little flexible, but otherwise we stick to the hour and a half rule.

Wow, I'm really surprised a lot of people have limits on how much tv their children watch. In our family we never had any rules about tv, ps2, or computers. Some days I would be in fron t of th tv from 9am til 11pm. It just depends on the person i guess. It's not like I did this everyday. But on week-days after school and homework, we never had a limit on what we could watch or how much.
