How much to tip on a haircut?

I've been going to the same stylist for the past 2 years, and she's amazing. The first few times I saw her, I tipped 20%, but now we are in that stylist turned friend territory and I tip her about 50%. She also spends about 2 hours with me each time I go in, making sure I'm perfectly happy with the end result, so I think the level of service she supplies me with is above and beyond any service I've gotten at other salons.

For a wash, cut, and blow dry my stylist charges me $30 and I give her a $10 tip. She is the only one that has ever touched my hair and I have been going to her for 30 years. She always tells me that I leave too much of a tip, but I appreciate her and it is worth it to me.

well, back at my previous hairdresser I paid 28.00 for the haircut/blowdry,left 5.00-
now I go to a friend who has her own chair in a salon, and pay a straight 50.00 for wash, cut and dry. (more $$$ but I love her work)

$2 and never more than that. They are getting paid a fair wage, unlike food servers, and I don't feel the need to supplement their incomes.

I got my hair cut yesterday. The cut was $65 and I gave her $75, so a $10 tip. I'm never sure what to give, but that is more than 15% but less than 20% so I figured I was in the ball park.

I heard the lady behind me give a $5 tip, but I don't know what service she got (haircut, trim, style, spa treatment, etc???).

I usually give double that for a Christmas bonus.

I always give my stylist $20

Depending what I get done my total varies between 90 and 130 (before tip)

Most stylists are actually paid commission or minimum wage so not exactly "fair"wage considering they now pay around 15,000 to go to school. That said a tip is extra and you should give what you feel comfortable giving. Most inexpensive cuts are given by newer stylists who have few regular clients so they spend much of their day sitting waiting for someone to walk through the door. So just because they get 40-50% of what they charge you does not mean you can multiply that times 40 hrs per week and get their salary. In fact without tips many make barely over minimum wage.

My dd#2 is an assistant in a shop and usually gets a $2 or $3 tip for a shampoo, and but sometimes she gets nothing. :confused3

My haircut is $14 and I always give her a 20.

My stylist is the owner and it takes her 20 minutes tops and she charges $28.00. I usually leave $3 cash. The shampoo guy is tipped seperately I just found out. The shop makes quite a bit on their products too and they really push them.

My hairstylist is 35.00 for haircut and I leave 20%.

I Do know what my stylist gets paid, she gets 50% of whatever I pay the salon. So if I get a $40 cut, she gets $20 (it takes her less than 30 minutes to wash cut, style and dry my hair), if I get a $120 color, she gets $60. It takes her about an hour to do my color on the rare occasion I get the color there, but she takes a haircut in between while I am waiting for my color to process, so she can easily do a haircut plus a $120 color in one hour, that's $80. I think a 20% tip is plenty, she's not making $3.00 an hour like a waitress is.

My haircut and blow dry is 35.00 and I give her 42.00. I think 20% is plenty also. In the past, I have paid 15% or so and I think the stylists were ok with that, too.

I've always wondered about this because my stylist rents space at a beauty store. So if she is making her own prices should you still tip for service? I usually tip her $10, but I guess I am thinking of it like, "would I tip my lawn guy?" or a handyman, or the plumber? I am just curious.

Anyone clear this up for me? :D

Thanks!

I'm still only giving $2

I give this amount, too. My cuts are $18 (wash, cut, blow dry) and I give $20. I'm usually there around 20 minutes and I think that is a fair amount. Shoot just a few years ago I didn't even tip at all cause I didn't know you were supposed to. I thought they just charged what they wanted to make until I came to the boards and learned otherwise. lol. I couldn't imagine paying $65 for a haircut.

I wonder about this every cut. My stylist owns his salon. Am I supposed to tip him? I always do, but I wonder if I am supposed to. Sometimes I wonder if I insult him with a tip (I know. That is crazy.) But I wonder if I am doing the right thing by tipping. I don't think you have to tip the owner, but i also don't want to no tip if I should. What to do?????

How do people not know this? I mean, as much as I can't stand tip jars at fast food places, salon workers are in tipped positions, just like cab drivers and servers.

I was once told by the owner of a salon, that the owner is NEVER tipped.

It was my first time at the salon, and it just so happened that the owner did my hair. I didn't know he was the owner and so when I paid, I left a tip. He handed it back to me, telling me that the owner is never, ever tipped. I figure he should know. :rotfl:
