My DS6 and I have appointments for hair cuts tomorrow. We've used the same gal since my DS was 2-in fact, he's got quite a crush on her!
How much is the right amount to tip her?
She works in a nice salon. My haircut is $30, my DS is $15. I also have her wax my eyebrows- $10.
I always get her a special something at Christmas. Just wanted to know how much would be appropriate to tip. We go about every 8 weeks. I've been tipping $10. Does that sound right?

I think the rule of thumb is 20%, so you're close to that. I'd say that's fine.

My stylist charges about $21 to do both my boys' cuts, and I usually write her a check for $25.

I tip 25% because it rounds nicely; otherwise I'd be fine with tipping down to 20%.

Wow. I love living in rural Maine! My haircut is $17. I usually give her $20 (she's the owner, and I know you don't have to tip the owner, but she does a nice job).

Sounds right to me. For just a cut I usually give $4-5. I certainly wouldn't give more.

normally $5.00 but if they are the owner of the sallon then there is a different rule.. cannt remeber it lol

you technically aren't supposed to tip the owner.

Perfect tip and I am sure she is glad to see you. I did hair for 20 plus years. :hippie:

I think it is funny that people say you don't need to tip the owner of a salon. That used to be true because the owners usually got a take from the other stylist, however, now most salons are rental and the owners only get booth rent.

Tipping is suppose to be given in appreciation of a service performed. Owner, or not, if they did a service and did it well, they deserve a tip.

Let me also say, that I am a cosmetologist and I know what clients appreciate my services and compensate me for it. With that said, it also dictates who I will "bend over backwards for" . Meaning if they need me to come in on a special time or my day off or need something out of the ordinary, I will help them. It pays to be nice to your stylist or nail professional.

Please don't flame me for things I have said, I am just telling the truth.

Back to the original question, I charge $26-$30 for a rebalance on nail enhancements. I usually get $3-$5 for a tip. It is very much appreciated!

I totally agree. I love my hairstylist, I've been going to her for about 5 years and it took me going thru several people to find her because my former gal moved to Wyoming. It's soooo nice to be able to go in and she knows EXACTLY what to do and how I like my hair without me having to try and explain it.
Plus the way I see it, it's cheaper to pay a good tip than to re-do a bad haircut, LOL.

OMGoodness! I'm starting to feel ripped off. I pay about $60 for just a cut, and when I do highlights, it is $130, and I have short hair! I've gone to three different places in the past 10 years, and that seems to be the going rate. I think I'm going to the wrong places!!! $30 for a haircut....that's awesome!!!

You all are getting some cheap haircuts. I have long hair (nearly mid back) and the going rate for cut & highlights is $150 in the metro Atlanta area if you want a good cut & color. That's double what I was paying when I lived in the greater LA area 5 yrs ago. I always tip 20% and at Christmas if I get my hair done then I double my tip as her gift.
