How much to make my own Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich?

Uncrustables are gross IMO and have horrid ingredients (to all countries but America, it seems). Now, I'm not saying the jelly is any better at a food court (we would likely have to find a honey packet for DS since that's what he prefers, and we would still make sure it's actually honey and not honey-flavored corn-based sugars), but it's not like Uncrustables are awesome or something everyone can eat.

And yet, Uncrustables contain the same ingredients as the individual components.

There's absolutely nothing preventing the OP from making PB&J sandwiches at home, then bringing these even cheaper sandwiches on the trip.

Minimus.biz for the honey packets.

I just don't think the intended purpose is to make a whole sandwich. Just like the intended purpose of buying a double burger wasn't so people could request and extra bun (and maybe buy it?) and make 2 burgers, or the toppings bar at QS locations being turned into a salad (even if you buy something else).

Really, it just seems so silly. It's blatantly obvious that someone's twisting this into something it wasn't intended for to save a buck - and we all know what happens at Disney with stuff like that, even when they have bigger issues. They just remove it, which on the end affects other people. And that's personally what annoys me about this stuff. Is it really that hard to buy a loaf of bread and some PB&J? Nobody going to Disney is that hard up.

Do you use more peanut butter on a sandwich then you would on toast if you ate the two pieces separately? Maybe that is what I'm missing. I didn't think someone would.

You are buying different ingredients then I am or you haven't read the ingredient label. I don't buy bread or jelly with corn syrup or HFCS, and uncrustables have both. I don't use smuckers jelly even out of a jar. I use good stuff. (Which is why the jelly probably couldn't be used by us from a food court) My pb&js are significantly different health wise for my DH and DS, who cannot have those ingredients, than the uncrustables. That product made my life horrid until we figured out what the problem was. So many zoo visits and two Disneyland day trips ending in massive violent tantrums because of the innocent pb&j I bought for DS. :(

In the opposite way of the statement I thumbs'upped....what IS the intended end-place for the PB, if not on bread? What does Disney think we should do with it?

Um, hello? The condiments are there for theming, just like the old newspapers, teacups, and cobwebs in the Tower of Terror queue. They're part of the backstory that makes it seem like you're eating in a "restaurant" where guests eat "food" that's "seasoned" with "condiments." One's not actually supposed to eat them, for pete's sake! One wouldn't lick the honey wall in the "Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" queue, would one?

I don't like peanut butter, but I would use more for a kids sandwich than a piece of toast, yeah. But then you're also using jelly to make a sandwich. Most people put jelly or peanut butter on their toast or bagel.

I mean sure, I could buy two pieces of bread and make myself a condiment sandwich everyday with mayo, ketchup, and mustard but is that really what it's there for? I just don't see it as different than my other examples. I really shouldn't be surprised. I've seen some crazy ways of saving a buck at Disney. This is hardly the most outrageous.

The OP doesn't indicate in any way that the ingredients in the peanut butter or the jelly are an issue for her at all. This isn't a discussion about ingredients. A poster other than the OP having specific ingredient issues or standards isn't really relevant. She's not going to find "good stuff" on a condiments counter. She's going to find Smucker's or something similar, so Uncrustables would be fine.

Or she can make her own sandwiches at home, or bring all three ingredients from home.

I agree wholeheartedly and this position is where I was coming from in my earlier post.
I agree that it is fine to use the condiments, in reasonable quantities for their intended purpose.
I don't think that was the OP's question

I think the condiment packets are intended for the bread and bagels purchased there. I've never used them so I don't know how much you get from each packet, if she's just using one of each I don't think it's a big deal. If you need four or five packets of each for a sandwich then I'd say just buy your own jars.

My DD10 and DS8 love their "toast" only slightly warmer and dry(er) to the touch than an untoasted piece of bread in the toaster, and think that when the toast turns any shade of brown it is burned (I know...they are weird).

DD LOVES peanut butter and eats it on her "toast" every day. Lots of it. Probably as much as one packet of PB that is put out at food courts or buffets. Sometimes, if she is exceptionally hungry, she will even go as far as toasting TWO pieces of bread, spreading PB on both, or even one side with PB and one with jelly, then smushing the two together and eating it like that!

If she wanted that at WDW and there was PB packets out, like there are at many food courts, breakfast buffets, or 2-star hotel breakfast rooms (Mmmm - waffles!), I sure hope none of you are around to see this - I'd be afraid the "sandwich" would be ripped out of her little hands and we'd be stuck with a lecture fro the food court PB police on the indecency of not using the peanut butter for its intended purposes!!!

If you buy the bread, it doesn't matter how you toast it, when you eat it, or how you prepare it. Slather PB, jelly, or butter, or mayo. Who cares? You bought the bread, you get your choice of condiment to put on it. 1 slice of bread=one condiment.

Let it go people.

ETA: And FYI - The only reason it would be discouraged is because it makes you more full - thereby not being hungry enough to feel the need to purchase a $8 hot dog two hours later. But even seeing this through the eyes of a money-hungry business doesn't make it morally wrong for a person to use a complimentary condiment on a relevant food item that was purchased at the same place the condiment is offered. and, I am sure the parks would be THRILLED to see a mom making her little one a "bread and peanut butter" sandwich with bread and PB packets put out at the buffets...imagine all of the savings on the cost of bacon! It's amazing how that suddenly could work in favor FOR the business, isn't it??!!

Why, yes, I have. And I love it.

LOL there's always one ;)

People will even go so far as to defend Disney condiments now! In the grand scheme, whether or not OP takes 2 PB packets or 13 to make a sandwich, it has no impact on our lives. :coffee:

So what are everyone's thoughts on the "complimentary" bottles of shampoo & conditioner in the rooms? I've been known to take a few home with me. Should I turn myself in to the Disney police? The hairdryers are our's to keep too, right?:rotfl2:

How many people got extra bottles of shampoo on the cruise ship by getting theirs replenished when the first one wasn't yet empty??

I wouldn't go so far with the hairdryers though.

I don't think it is morally wrong to use the condiments if you purchase something. I don't consider it stealing.

I disagree that it doesn't affect my life. There are several fast food places I know of where they specifically limit your condiment intake. Some will only give it upon request (meaning they don't let it sit out) and some will charge if you want more than one ketchup packet for your fries.
I like ketchup, so at these places I have to either pay more now or go out of my way to argue for 3 packets of ketchup.

Yeah. Just like the people refilling their 7-11 mugs with pop has had no impact on our lives. Oh, wait a minute..........

I don't buy bread or jelly with corn syrup or HFCS, and uncrustables have both. :(

Why not? corn syrup, HFCS, and sugar are all the same - all are fructose and glucose! HFCS has gotten a bad rap, but look it up if you don't believe they are all the same! :confused3

Wait, I'm not supposed to? I thought it was like the lickable wallpaper in Willie Wonka... I've been doing this for years. No wonder people loot me funny.... :rotfl2:

In the grand scheme of things, nothing that anyone does on their trip has a direct impact on our lives. However, when Disney changes things around to discourage people finding creative ways to save a buck, it does end up affecting others.

It's a discussion board - we're discussing a question posed on a discussion board. Novel concept :headache: I hardly think anyone on this thread is policing the condiment bar (as someone above suggested. Melodramatic much?). Frankly, I wouldn't even have thought someone would think about making a sandwich like this, or heat up hot dogs in coffee pots, or make grilled cheese with an iron, or make a salad from the toppings bar...
