We will be taking my brother and his wife to WLV and we will be using our points for all of the stay for both studio rooms. how much is apropriate to charge my brother per night to stay (He would not go if he can't help pay for part of it)

I really do not know about how much to "charge him" why don't you suggest ( if he feels he MUST pay) a dinner here or there? That sort of thing....

Rav,

We are taking a family to WDW for their first trip in March 2002. Each family is staying in a 1 bedroom at OKW and my friend insists on paying their share. I sat down with him and educated him on DVC and how it allows us to share our vacation with family and friends. He still insists on picking up his share so we reached an agreement that they would pick up a few meals during the 10 days that we are there. He was quite happy with the compromise and is looking forward to spending 10 glorious days at Disney.

If you brother still insists on paying, may I suggest using the rate of 10.00 per point. This seems to be the standard rental rate at most DVC locations. Time of year and resort location may vary but all in all 10.00 per point wil not break the bank and it can be easily verified at some of the rental websites.

How about what your dues cost you for the number of points being used. That would still be a deal for him and it would help you out a little.

Well, when I joined DVC they offered $5.00 per point to buy back the first year. The going rate when selling points seems to be between $8.00 and $10.00 per point.

So, I'd probably charge a friend or family member (who wanted to pay) from $5.00 to $8.00 per point depending how 'badly' they wanted to share the expense. (i.e. can they afford it, or is the whole point to make the trip more affordable for them).

If the weekly studio rate is 134 points, then $5.00 per point adds up to $670. Not too bad when the rack rate for a studio during peak season is $364 per night! :) Of course, the beauty is that you can make up any rate per night you'd like! :) Picking up a few meals is also a great idea. Whatever everyone is comfortable with!

Have a great trip!

We never charge guests to stay, but most do something in return like a nice meal out at a better resaurant or, as the couple coming this year, taking us to Cirque d Soliel.

We ran into your problem, rav, when we invited my parents to go along on a Hawaii exchange in a 2br. They absolutely INSISTED they had to pay something and taking us out for a couple of nice meals just wouldn't cut it for them. So we came up with the idea of charging them $50 per night. That is significantly cheaper than the $10 per point, (or even $5). It made them happy and it worked out so well that we figure that when we invite our brothers/sisters/inlaws and their families along on vacation, if they insist on splitting costs we'll just charge $50 per family per night. For us, it's a win/win situation without having to do a bunch of math. Good luck!

The definitive answer is ...It depends. For us, some (like our parents) have already paid in a million different ways and these trips are our little thank you to them. Some years from now when only our dues remain we will extend this thank you to other family members and friends. Until then, we enjoy being able to offer them great rooms at rates that make us all smile.

thank you all for all the good advice. I think I'll let him pay for Tiffany and do the luanry, that should make it even. Rav4lcrv
