How Much Of Your Wedding Is For A Family Reunion?

It has become very trendy to say that marriage is just a little piece of paper and means nothing really. Of course, a paycheck is just a little piece of paper. How many such people would throw a fit if they didn't get theirs?

I think a big part of weddings is family closeness. At the most recent wedding which I attended the mother of the groom made a very important point when she said that most of the time when the whole family comes together someone has died. How many of you picked a Disney wedding because it provides such a good location for an extended family vacation? I think that would be a major incentive for me.

SanFranciscan, I love your Dis name -- that's my favorite city on the planet, ~sigh.~

When we got married the first time, we were basically forced to elope and thus had no family at our wedding except for my sister & brother-in-law, who flew in on the sly to be our witnesses (logistics were why we were forced to elope -- it had nothing to do with family issues; just thought I'd mention that). We did have a wedding reception at my parents' house when we visited them over the Christmas holidays, so all was not lost.

When we planned our vow renewal 20 years later, we chose Walt Disney World for a couple of very important reasons. (1) We loved vacationing there, and (2) We had enjoyed many vacations there with extended family and friends. It was truly the most perfect place for our vow renewal.

So, yes, the location was definitely a major incentive for us. ;)

Hiya!

I'm not actually getting married in Disney... We are getting married in a small chapel offsite but our then having our wedding dinner at Disney, along with the Grand 1 for Wishes. After 5 years together DF asked me to marry him a couple of months ago, and as we already had a vacation planned to Orlando, it seemed like the ideal time to do it.

The vacation was originally booked in March 2007 and was for 6 of us. Myself, DF, DS (12) DF's daughter (17), and my lovely lovely parents, who decided they had nothing better to do with my Dad's retirement payout than treat us all to a lovely family holiday! I can't wait... I'm more excited about spending time with my fantastic parents than I am anything else... And whilst I have always said IF I ever got married again (this will be 2nd time around for me) that I would go away to do it... but my parents not being there just wasn't an option. When we decided to go ahead and get married in Orlando, we booked an extra flight and paid to take DF's Mum with us... so its going to be a real family affair! There truly is no better place on earth to spend time with the people who mean the most to you!

Oh... and when we get back, we are having an evening reception (DJ, huge buffet... that kind of thing) for all those who didn't come to Florida so we get to celebrate again with the rest of our extended family and our friends!

Eeek! Another 47 sleepies until we fly, and 53 sleepies until the big day!!!!

Edited to add... If you'd have asked me 3 months ago... I'd have been one of those 'trendy' people who told you a piece of paper means nothing!! Funny how 3 months later I can't wait to get hold of it and it means the world to me!!! :-)))
