How Much Money would you spend to save your Pet?

I would pay that. Actaully, I would pay a LOT for a vet bill. I have spent about $800 for my kitty, Remy, because he throws up all the time. X rays, poop samples, blood tests, you name it! Only to be diagnosed with a sensitive stomach. REALLY!! I wouldn't have know from the puke stains all over my house! But I love him anyway. It's all in being a Mommy!

Pete - do you home test your kitty? Saves a fortune...you can do your own BG curves and adjust the insulin yourself over a matter of time.

When mine was diagnosed I freaked...I wasn't sure I could handle injecting and I was petrified of the costs. Some people I know have paid over $1000 and still didn't have their cats regulated. I do almost everything myself now, and it costs $30-$40 bucks per month. A small price to pay for my kitty. I do know that if he starts having other diabetes related problems I will consider putting him down. I don't want him to suffer and I don't want to prolong his life just to make me happy.

It is so hard to make these decisions. We have had to do it too many times. In the soon to be 20 years we have been married, we have lost 4 cats and 2 dogs, the most recent was my cat Suzie last Thursday.

We did not choose treatment for her, she was 17 and failing fast. We made the right decision for her. She was tired and had had enough.

We also spent $695 on our female lab/shep cross last year for 'girl surgery'. She was too plump around her ******l area and was 'sunken in'. (The doctor actually drew pictures for us to explain the problem) They had to remove the excess tissue and 'raise' the area. She was having repeated infections, and a really bad case of diaper rash like symptoms. Poor girl! Diet did not help, and desitin and baby wipes did not do enough (not to mention the hit to her dignity) BUt the surgery was successful, she is doing great and no more girl problems.

That decision wa much easier to make than some we have been faced with. We luckily had a great vet who always gave us great information in which to make informed decisions. He never tried to influence us one way or another, or tried to make us feel guilty if did not choose treatment. Then he retired! So we are shopping for a new vet and hope we can find someone half as good as he was!

(I know long post, but real quick- a couple weeks before we lost Suzie, an abandoned, pregnant cat wandered into our yard and stayed! She is the sweetest, most wonderful cat! And she comes packing kittens! So we are expecting a litter ANY day now. So as one door closes, another opens. Ellie will never replace my Suzie, but it sure is nice to have a cat in the house! And yes, we will be keeping at least 1 if not 2 of the kittens :))

I'd spend ANY amount!

I can't stand anyone who does not understand how us pet lovers feel. You know, the people who "It's JUST a cat/dog! It's NOT a person!" UGGHHHH!! THOSE are also the kind of people who give away pets to the pound when they think their pet has become an inconvenience. THOSE people are those who should NEVER have pets!

I'd spend every cent I could scrounge up to take care of Dillon, my 2 year old dog. I figure I'm responsible for taking the best possible care of my furbaby I can just like I would be responsible of taking care of a child if I had one.

I'd spend whatever I could to save one of my cats unless I saw that there was no way to save him. I feel obligated to help them and I love them too much not to do so anyway.

We lost one sweetheart of a cat that we found at the SPCA to asthma. The doctor did all he could but we couldn't get it under control and the poor thing finally died from lack of oxygen. I knew that she was suffering so I was ready to give up but she made the decision for us. The bill was high but I'd spend it again because you just never know.

Luckily, we've had a few other pets that needed major work (including a punctured eye) and made it through just fine. :)

I'd spend all the money I had to look after my animal friends. They are the closest things I have to children and I consider them my family. Pets are a big responsibility and if one can't afford their occasional care should they become ill then one should reconsider having them. I think it is unfair to take in a helpless animal and then bail on them if they get sick.

My lab had chemo twice. Probably a couple thousand. He was a great dog, we knew it wouldn't save him, but it put him into remission and gave us another 2 yrs with him. Was it worth it? You bet!

Wow, this thread makes me smile.:D I'm so glad there are so many other people out there who are devoted pet owners like I and my DH. I have 4 dogs and 3 cats, and I've spent major bucks over the years on them. My beloved Wilma has had 2 ACL surgeries at $600 a pop. Max, my fat cat, has been treated for a urinary blockage (my DH rushed him to an emergency clinic at midnight to have him taken care of) - that was several hundred dollars. Now he's on very expensive prescription food for the rest of his life. My sweet Barney, who has since passed away, was a stray I found walking down our street. He had heartworms when we found him. The vet told my DH we should discuss whether to spend the $$ to treat him or not. My husband called from the vet and said, "He says we should discuss it," and I said, "What's to discuss?" My husband agreed, and we had him treated. We had Barney for almost 9 more years after that. Pets are a huge responsibility, and if people aren't willing to take the responsibility seriously, they shouldn't have pets. We believe in "in sickness and in health" and "til death do us part" with our pets.

My DH & I don't have any children. I would spend anything on him! I love my Simbo-sauce!

Thanks for CHEERING me up!;) You ALL are the best!;) I had one of my ex-coworkers tell me today: I wouldn't spend that much its just a cat!   I told her, "Whatever, thats YOUR oppinion!":o Than I come home and read your all wonderful comments and made me smile, and cry!;) By the way, GIZMO will be coming home tonight after 5!:bounce:

Give GIZMO a great big hug and kiss from me and my Licorice.

It depends on how old my boys are, what the disease is, what the pet's quality of life is with the treatment, how much the treatment is and how much it would save (ie, if it's $9000 and only buys us another year, it's probably not worth it.) But, if/when I'm faced with making that decision in a hurry.... I really hope DH is there to help me, because I would pay ANYTHING to save my babies in an emergency! The one night Wedge was sick I was hysterical -- didn't sleep all night as I force fed him water.

DH will not, however, consider comestic surgery on Wedge. Poor baby had a run-in with a car engine (before I adopted him), and has a ripped ear and damage around his jaw. I want to get his face cleaned up a little, but DH is dead set against it. Meanie poop head -- the kitty just wants to be pretty!

I probably wouldn't base a decision on money so much as on the quality of life for the pet.

If Ted had some kind of problem that was going to be $500 to fix, but he'd be OK, and be able to run and play and jump on my bed to sleep, and eat biscuits etc, then the money wouldn't be an issue. But I wouldn't keep a pet alive just so they could lay around the house and be miserable all day.

It is a difficult decision as to when enough is enough, but it is the ultimate act of love to ease a pet's suffering.
