If you are getting it on your own (no class gift)...
I'd say between $1-10.

My plan is to finish theirs by the end of the year. Maybe one by Valentine's, one by Easter, one by the end of the year!
I just had to laugh because of the teacher gift threads every year that say NO MORE MUGS PLEASE! Not to mention this teacher is in her 50's and could probably stock a coffee shop with the amount of mugs she's gotten over the years. We gave several magnetic note pads, a big block of post it notes and a nice pen. She is forever sending notes home and using post-its, and I know some teachers have to buy their own supplies like that so at least I know they'll get used. I would think $5-$10 is enough to get a thoughtful, practical gift, or a GC in that amount will buy a nice lunch or a few cups of coffee.

Plus I contribute to the teacher whole school gift with $20.00.Our school district made a big fuss this year over gifts. The only cash / giftcard type gifts can be from the class as a whole and cant be more than $100 in total.
Individual gifts can't be monetary.
We may spend 10-20 on a small gift and bake some cookies.
I am fine w limiting the gift policy...
In our district the average teacher makes $100k/yr (yes, that is jusy a salary number... not including benefits). and they will get a fantastic pension and medical benefits for life.

Thats about average here too but I still get her a 25.00 gift certificate because my daughter really likes her.
