How much money do you give for First Communion?

We give savings bonds -- my nephew just made his first communion, and we gave him a $200 bond. Next week is my nieces, she will get the same thing. If it were a child I wasn't as close to, I'd give them a $100 bond.

I'd give $25 regardless of who it is (relative, friend...) That's just our budget on that type of thing!

We also give 25.00. I agree its a budget that DH and I set. If its a relative than its more though.

It must vary geographically! Wow! DS just made his 1st communion and if someone had given hime $100 or $200 we would have been really surprised!

Grandma & Great Grandma each did a $50 bond. A couple of other relatives and close friends gave $25 each. One family friend gave $10. We bought him a bible.

I am not sure what we are giving currently, but have been to 3 in the past 3 weeks. I leave it to Marie in that area.

I didn't really realize how much differed geographically until I've read some recent DIS threads! Wedding gifts, Communion traditions and gifts, etc etc. Everybody thinks we make more money here in the Northeast....I think we're just giving it all away!

We gave our nephew $75 two years ago for his Communion. My DS made his Communion 2 weeks ago & he got from a $300 gift certificate to a jewelry store (from his Godparents) to $5 from his grandparents. (But that's another thread!) Everything in between was very generous too. We added nearly $1000 to his savings account. (Had a very small party ~ about 28 people but also received monetary gifts from friends thru the mail.)

I just went to one on Saturday. It was for a close friends daughter so we gave her $50. This weekend I have one for my cousin's son. We are very close so I am giving him $100.

My son made his in April. We had a small party...about 28 also...with that number being made up by small family units. He made $480 in cash, which we added to his college fund, a skateboard he was dying for from our friend, who first asked me if it was OK to get it b/c it wasn't an "appropriate" Communion gift...I thought it was FABULOUS b/c it's just what he wanted, a $100 savings bond, a gold cross from us and a St. Michael medal to wear on the chain with the cross from his grandmother.

DS made his 1st Communion May 1st. He received $100 from my mother, $50 from MIL, $50 from Great Grandmother, $50 from Great Aunt and Uncle, $40 from an Aunt & Uncle, $10 from my friend and $0 from another Uncle. So, I would say it's what you can afford (although the Uncle that gave him $0 could have afforded to give him a gift).

Yep, along with DH other brother & SIL (this brother is DS Godfather) who asked when DS was making 1st Comm. and said he might have to work that day and would let us know. When I asked the Sun. before DS Comm. their answer was that they sold their old boat and had to drive it to the new owner THAT day. HMMMM, I wonder what they would have done with that boat if BIL had to work THAT day??? Yes, you detect a bit of bitterness, but this is another whole thread. We won't even get into MIL not coming to the church.

We just gave our goddaughter a $100 saving bond, and a few personalized items for the day. Her parents don't really understand the bond thing but someday it will pay for a couple of things at college. I paid for my first two years of college with the ones I rec. since birth!
