If you want to eat in certain Disney restaurants than you really do need ADRs, if you are not bothered, you will get a small number of places that may accept you as a walk up on the day, but they are becoming few and far between.
As for the dining plan, we had it last year and it was great. This year I personally think it doesnt make anything cheaper since they removed the appetizer and the tip from the plan - others will disagree with me, some like the dining plan because for them it is a good way to budget as the food is paid in advance - I guess it depends how much and how often you like to eat.
old style with tip and appitizer, great had it frre and paid, this years with tip and app removed wouldent touch it with a barge pole if had to pay, second thoughts if it was free
Hopefuly after all the furoure they might reintroduce tip and app next year
As for adrs yes do them even if not on ddp, sept is free ddp and its mad busy at that time

We have never booked ADRs in advance. WE usually get them at resort check in (we stay onsite). As for the DDP - we looked at it very closely and decided that, for us, there was too much food!!! We would never eat that much so it's a no go for us!

Thanks Probably Not Going To Do The DP,Way Too Much Food For Us Too & Also We Are Doing CL..I Would Think For Christmas Time You Would Need Some Kind Of ADRs As I Can Imagine It Will Be Mega Busy
i found we had way to much food on the dining plan, we like to do sit down meals and just couldnt manage a lunch and snack and sit down meal each day as well, we ended up buying prople things on the last day to use our credits, that was one happy turkey leg line that day
we found the kids would want ice cream and then trying to fit lunch round out dinner plans was akward, but if youre on a budget i still think its a good idea as its all prepaid!
we also like to eat some meals offsite we love the outback , blooming onion yummy, and some other places.
3 weeks till our planed visit to outback, can taste the onnion allreay, easy order us.3 bloomin onions with extra diping sorurse, and 10 victoria center cut fillets with a salad each

For us, there are just too many great restaurants outside WDW for us to commit to just Disney food.
Probably makes more sense for those without a car, but when you have transport (as most Brits do), it's just not an attractive option.
we go out there on 28th aug and i have had trouble booking adrs. We are going out to get married so wanted a few special ones and i got most of them at my 180 +10 mark but still cant get some and its 6 weeks to go.
I do agree though som great palces to eat outside disney
