How much for wedding and graduation?

The "appropriate" gift is whatever you can afford and/or feel comfortable giving.. There's no "going rate" - although some people definitely seem to think there is..

Obviously it varies by region and by what you can afford and want to give.

Generally speaking, we don't give extravagant gifts. Generally for a high school or college graduation, we've been giving about $50-$75 (they have all been cousins, and two nephews). The only weddings we've been to have been my brother's and and a coulple of cousins. For my brothers we gave bigger gifts, about $250. For cousin weddings we've always done $100.

Personally, I'd give the graduate $50 and the groom to be $100.

Weddings are extremely regional. For my family it's always been 50-100. HS grad for my nephews I think we did 25 or 50, can't remember.

Same around here--all of you folks that give over $100 for a high school graduation are invited to DS17's graduation party Getting $100 for a WEDDING present is really outstanding around here, I can't imagine that for a high school graduation.

For me, it would depend on how close I am with the girl graduating and the guy getting married. If I saw them at least once a year and had a decent relationship, I'd probably give $50 to the graduate and $100 to the groom.

If they were relatives I saw only once or twice in my lifetime, I wouldn't give money for the grad, just a congrats card, and I'd probably give a gift off the registry (something in the $25 range) to the groom.

I can't imagine giving $300 - $500 for anyone's wedding, except for our children. We did give more to each of them, but for other relatives we give a much lower amount. Usually buy something off their registry, or go in with other family members to get something more expensive off it. And friends, or children of friends, even lower than that. Usually $50.

Graduation, if it's a non-relative, usually $20. A neice or nephew would get $100.

I agree completely...but on these threads, why then do some people say they can't imagine giving more than what they think is the right amount? If people are comfortable with more and want to give more, let them!

I'd give $50 - $100 for the graduation, and $300 average for DH and I to attend a wedding.

Wow! I'm amazed at what some of you give for weddings. No wonder people these days have huge, extravagent weddings - they'll have it paid in full before they get through 1/2 the gift cards!

Me too! DD is getting married in October and you all who are giving 300 and over are invited! Her dad & I can only afford a very small portion of the cost, so she and her fiance are paying for the wedding themselves, on a pretty strict budget (they're spending less than 1/2 of what their friends have paid for an "average" wedding). I know they do not expect to get enough in gift money to pay for it.
