We are getting a bombe chest in our foyer, with two buffet lamps on top. There is no place to plug in the lamps. I called an electrician and he quoted $150 to install an electric outlet on the wall. They will probably run the electric from the basement.

Does this sound like a reasonable price? (we are in Southern NJ) :scratchin

Thanks!

Sounds reasonalbe to me. If they have to "snake" the wire to the place in the wall it'll cost you in labor time.
Of course, what do I know? I can't spell reasonable.

Yes thats a good price. You do not tip tradesmen.

yes it sounds reasonable. We had rewire work in our kitchen and each outlet was $100--but they were already working in there anyway.

So $150 just for an outlet seems reasonable.

I agree no tipping.

They spent maybe 3 or 4 hours on our job and got $500 or so (don't recall exactly but no more than $1000). I imagine they are making a nice enough wage that i don't need to tip on top of that.

Before I read the rest of your post, I was thinking $150. We got some work done this year and minimum charge was $80 just to walk in the door and do anything other than an estimate.

I'd gladly pay $150 for an electrician. We have a bunch of friends that are union electricians and I can't get them to do anything for me -- even if I offer to pay them. It's funny because I was just thinking about my electrical issues this morning!

Also, my boss informed me that you're supposed to tip tradesmen -- a fact that I think is ridiculous given the fees they charge!

Congrats on your 4000th post Sweetangel :cheer2:

Thanks everybody! I feel good about the price now!

I always tip anyone who works in my house - believe me, I think the price would be much higher if they saw me in a short skirt :scared:

Okay so here are a few tips for them:

Don't play in traffic
don't eat yellow snow
don't "hot" wire be sure to turn off the main switch
don't chew with your mouth open
don't run with scissors
don't play with sticks you might put out an eye

I am sure there are tons more but you could be generous and give them a couple of these tips.

I may have to resort to therapy -- or schooling to learn how to do it myself.

Wow...4000 posts? I need to get a life!

My DH is an union electrician and he will hardly do side jobs anymore. Everytime he has, it has always turned into a mess. Usually there is always something *weird* with the wiring that he can foresee and he spends more hours than he estimated (and doesn't charge). Also, he installed two ceiling fans for someone once. About 2 months later, one of the fans started wobbling and clicking. They constantly called my husband and felt he should "fix" it. He tried telling them that it was an unbalanced fan, but they were just regular PITAs. So, he REALLY, REALLY shies away from doing stuff for people anymore.

Oh, and he never expects a tip.
