How much does US Airways and Delta and Allegiant and AirTran charge for the 1st checked bag and when do you pay for it? I remember that one of the airlines woudln't let you pay for the 1st bag till a day or two before your flight and if you forgot, and paid for it at the airport,then it cost more.

Delta is $23 each way in advance - $25 at the airport.

Supposedly you don't NEED to purchase your ticket w/ AMEX, just have the AMEX Delta Gold (or higher). The 1st bag free also applies to you and up to nine other people on your reservation. According to some message boards, when you fill out your AMEX app you put in your skymiles number and are automatically linked, so the discount occurs automatically without needed to do anything "special". I haven't experienced it myself yet, but we did apply/receive the card specifically for this benefit (sucker for marketing, LOL!). We also got 25k free skymiles, 1st year no fees (2nd year is $95 plus a free companion ticket - worth more than the fees and we'll use that so worth it to keep for at least 2 years for us). We'll be trying out the free bag deal in Aug and bought our tickets long before the promo was around, so can report officially once we've experienced it.

Just booked with Allegiant, online it is $20 each way. If they check your luggage before boarding it's 35 each way.

It's crazy! I bought three round trip tickets for $228 total! To add the fee for baggage would be $120, just for three checked luggage.

With Airtran it was 15$ and I paid for it when I did early check in. I did have to put in CC info at that time.

I just flew Airtran last week and it was $30 per bag each way. Oh DUH! I checked two bags!!! It was $30 for both.
