I'm 40 and haven't had one yet. I've heard that insurance doesn't usually pay for them. If you don't mind telling, how much do they run?

Check your insurance policy. I think that most insurance covers them but maybe not the whole amount. I had one last year but I do not remember how much. I would guess in the $100 and up range. I was having lots of things going on and lots of tests and procedures so I can't remember which test what:confused3

My insurance covers mine, I just pay a $10 copay.

Call your insurance company first. I've never had one not paid for.

If they do not cover it, there are plenty of places associated with a hospital that will do it for low or no cost. Check with your local hospitals.

Almost all insurance companies pay for them. If yours doesn't and you can't afford one, contact your local county health department and the social worker at your local hospitals. There are lots of programs to pay for them.

Whatever you don't put it off! :)

My insurance cover it 100% as prevenative care. There are also plenty of breast cancer awareness programs that cover the cost for those whose insurance won't.

Just wanted to also suggest calling your carrier to see if they do pay for it. If not please call a local hospital or ASK your doctor for a recommendation to a low cost or no cost mammo location somewhere near you They are out there.
I actually go to thebreastcancersite.com EVERY DAY to "click" on their website to support people that cannot afford to get a mammo (their corporate sponsers will donate a free mammo per a certain amount of "hits" they get. You don't need to register or sign in or anything, just one click can ultimately help another woman!
Perhaps there is something like this in your area?

As a breast cancer survivor, 2 years out YEAH :cheer2: I am a strong advocate of mammo's and self exams....
it TRULY CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE if caught early enough!
God Bless and Be Well!

Majority of insurances pay for mammograms, check first. I haven't come across one yet that has refused a mammogram, maybe not a yearly mamm, but if this is your first you should be fine.
Also check with your local department of health, most states have federally funded programs that cover for free paps and mamms.
You can call the American Cancer Society to find a diagnostic center near you that participant in programs providing free mammograms if you are not covered - 1.800.ACS.2345. (Guess where I work ;) )

Nothing. Here in Canada you don't pay for them, the government does. We don't even see a bill and I have no idea of the cost. I love Canada.

My insurance paid for it but I had to pay a co payand the radiologists bill!

I've had regular mammograms, ultrasounds (when something was spotted on the original mammogram), aspirations of cysts, etc. and have never paid a penny. Our insurance covers it all, 100%, not even a co-pay.

Like everyone here has already said, please look into this, I honestly have never heard of an insurance company that didn't cover all or most of the costs of a mammogram.

I had my first one at 34 and another one at 36 and the insurance company paid 100% of the cost. I didn't even have to pay a co-pay.

I don't know what they cost, but I guarantee you it is a LOT less than cancer treatments.

I just have to say the whatever I had to pay I would. No price can be put on your health or life. Early detection is the key.

Please don't let the cost be an issue.

Usually when your doctor orders it, most insurances don't have a choice. Didn't they lower the suggested age to 40yo to start mammos? At any rate mine was $175 and I paid 20%. I agree, if there a problem with ins., don't go without getting one, there are other services available. It's one of the most important tests we can do for ourselves. :goodvibes

I'm having my first mammogram next Thursday. My insurance is with BCBS, I just checked and I'm covered 100% as preventative care.

With all of the breast cancer awareness, I can't imagine an insurance company not covering (at least part) this procedure.

I'm sure it must be covered. Its preventative. I doubt they would rather pay for breast cancer treatment.

If your policy won't cover it......you NEED a different policy. That's horrible!!!!

Heck, I think places even offer free screening for uninsured women. THAT's how important it is.

My policy does NOT have a co-pay for anything that is a routine preventative appointment.

It depends where you live.
I just looked at my insurance statement for the one I had last month. The total charge submitted by the facility to my ins compnay was about $326...for the mamm itself and the radiologist review. The ins company's contract with the provider pays up to $189 for a mammogram. The provider writes off the rest. I have no co-pay on it as it's considered Preventative or WellCare sevice.

A agree with the other posters that most ins companies pay for them and if they do not, there are low or no cost programs for them as well as for pap smears in most communities.

Another survivor here, coming up on 2 years, encouraging you to get that baseline and then make it part of your annual routine. :thumbsup2
