How much do you tip your Hair Stylist(s)/Salon?

WOW! I am just flabbergasted at what some prices people are paying.

I agree that it's just personal preference. I will never color my hair, or highlight it. I used to get perms, but stopped that too because they lasted less than three months.

I pay $10 every three weeks for a haircut and her tip is chocolate chip cookies. (By her request.) We are good friends and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

I would rather spend the money on my kids, or on a vacation. But then I am a wash, blow dry and go type of gal. Always have been and always will be. :D

I had been going to the same salon for years and paid $65 for cut and color. I used to tip 20% and the owner of the salon was doing my hair. I wasn't happy though with the way my cuts were lately and didn't love the color, so I recently had a friend's daughter-in-law (who is a hairdresser on the side) put some highlights in my hair. She charged me $70 and I thought that was a little high. I didn't tip her since she doesn't have any overhead really and was getting all the money tax free in her pocket. Do you think I should have tipped her?

I think that if she cut your hair at your house or hers - no. I have a friend that I go to and I have my hair cut at her house. I tell her before she cuts my hair to tell me how much it is including her tip. I tell her that I want her to ask me what she thinks is fair. I don't mind paying but I would rather have her decide how much to charge. I tell her to include a 20% tip for herself.

Hello ~

I have to chime in here too...my Mom owned a beauty salon a while ago, and did all the 'stuff' Mario Tricoci's does now....(they weren't around then when my Mom had her salon...anyway).....I agree with tipping a decent amount, I remember hearing stories from my Mom saying after a color, highlighting, etc., (something that was major and took a while) she'd either get nothing or next to nothing, or sometimes she'd get great tips, it just depended on the individual person...but I do believe in tipping hair stylists, shampoo people, etc., its your hair, remember that, and they're the ones in control in the chair with the scissors and colors!

I tip 20% on regular visits and about 50% at Christmas. I have read, several times in fact, that you are supposed to tip the cost of 1 service at Christmas. I don't think the prices the OP stated are too high. That's what hair costs where I live too (outside Phila, PA). In fact, I paid more when I lived in Northern New Jersey and that was 4 years ago! I can't imagine what is costs now, just glad I'm not paying it.

Geez, I'm glad I live where I do!!! Haircuts are $15.00 and coloring and perming is $35.00. My hair would be dragging on the ground if I had to pay those prices, or I would do it myself!!

Ditto on that!!! I make a lot of money and still would never spend that much to have my hair done with the same products for less!! I usually spend 70.00 for a lift and cut and tip about 10.00 depending on the attitude!!

Hmmm, I don't think I want to even divulge what I pay for such services . . .

I go to a salon that requests that you not tip the stylists, so does that mean I should also not give a Christmas gift/tip?

Maybe give them a gift and not actual cash/$$$.

I pay $90 every 7 weeks for a cut/color. I tip 20%. I think I'm pretty much in the middle of the road range. --Del

Just curious how much you tip your hair stylists/salon......

I have one person that colors my hair ($200-$250 w/o tip) then I have another who cuts my hair ($95 w/o tip)

I usually try 20% ~ is that toooo much or to little?

WOW, I had to read this a few times to make sure you didn't fat finger the keyboard. I say "Whatever makes you happy!" However I'm going to forward this to my mom...I do her hair on the side of my tub for free. Boy will she be surprised when she gets my next bill! LOL!

I pay $26 for a cut (I tip $6.00) and $45 for color (I tip $10.00).

HOWEVER--I would happily pay what you pay for cut & color if I loved the result. My stylist does a great cut sometimes and a mediocre cut at other times. I do not particularly like the results when he colors my hair--the color does cover my gray but I end up lightening it myself because what he considers "one shade lighter" than my natural color looks way too dark to me.

I go to him only because I have tried many other people over the last 15 years or so and he is the best I've found in my small city (sigh!)

I agree that everybody has their financial priorities. Disney is my major financial priority at the moment :-), but while I shop for clothes at department stores, live in your basic middle-class house, and drive a 6-year-old minivan with over 100,000 miles on it, I would spend practically anyting to have glorious hair!!

DH does think I'm nuts....so those who think I am, you are not the only one! :D

But DH knows what it's like to live with me when I wasn't happy with my hair. It's just a "thing" I have. I was in complete misery when we moved to Northern California before I found my hair guru there. But there was MANY attempts to find someone and alot of "fix it" appointments.

I should probably be a bit more specific....I don't just get color. I get like 3 colors weaved in my hair, plus color on top of the other colors. I don't know exactly....but she works magic. If I go in with a picture of Jennifer Anistons color and cut, and say I want that....POOF I got it. I feel I am paying for their skills and training. Both worked for Sassoon for MANY years. But because of new ownership, many staff left. The other woman that cuts my hair also has YEARS of experience with Sassoon. Training & worked in London, Chicago, NY, etc. She really is like a skilled artist with scissors. My haircuts last longer because she gets all my split ends.

It's all what you choose to spend money on. Some people spend money on a value resort at WDW and some spend money on a deluxe resort. I feel it's no different in this situation. As I grow older, I've learned to invest my $$$ in classic clothes too...but if I get a deal on them...all the better! But if you try and get me to go to a "foofy" restaurant, forget it....even if the meal is 100% paid for. :cool1:

If I could find someone less expensive and equally gives me the same results....that would be great. But the women I go to really have a talent. And I'm also not saying that you go to Sassoon and get great results. It all depends on the person. I was just hoping I was insulting them both :D for tipping 20%

Since becoming a manicurist I now get my cut & colors for free! :Pinkbounc Stylist do make good money, but remember that most pay booth rentals and purchase their own supplies and that can add up. :flower1:

I have natural curly hair with some problems such as cow licks and in humidity it just does exactly what it feels like. I had paid $6 for a cut and I had paid $70 for a cut and it still looked the same as always and did what it want. That all changed 3 years ago when I was told of a stylist who could make a difference. I am in my mid 30's now and really need color now as well. I go every 5 weeks for a cut and 10 weeks for a cut/color. For these services I pay $35 and $110. I tip between 15-20% depending on my personal circumstances. I don't think I pay to much and would pay more if the result was great. You wouldn't understand if you have easy hair or you are a more natural kinda girl. I wouldn't judge what anyone else pays for something. Everyone has their own priorities. This is now one of mine because I look better, feel better, and look more up to date instead of stuck in the 80's! This is what life is about girls- everyone is different- it is what makes the world go round' :flower1:

wow...you got that right my haircut is only 20 and I tip $5....I've been going to her for years..........

I just had my hair done (cut and partial foil) on Saturday and the cost was $80 - I would normally tip her about $20, but this time I gave her $40 since it's Christmas.

I'm in the wrong business! I should have followed in my mom's footsteps and learned how to cut hair! I only pay $38 for my haircut and I tip 20%.
