How much do you spend on grocery shopping?

Just the two of us (for now!) and we spend around £100 a fortnight plus another £20 a week on fruit and veg, so I guess that's around £70 a week.

That seems high considering I eat lunch at work!!

2 ad,2 children,usually around £60 a week.
We dont buy milk tho as we get this off DP's dad.
And we buy extras for sunday dinner/bacon etc seperate.

you guys seem to be talking loads about groceries...which is what i was wondering about. i live in vancouver, canada - and will be going up to the uk in a year's time or so. i was thinking of settling around glasgow or edinborough (depending on the job market, since i'm looking for jobs related to my industry)...

but for the beginning, i would need to plan out the financial junk first. i read your posts, and they're all averages going all over the place of how much a one can spend per week or month with a family. i don't know how the prices are over there (except that for us Canadians, everything is about twice as expensive over there) - how much is a loaf of bread? or milk? ..no idea - but would it be possible to live off of 50 pounds a month - for one person? I realize this may be an insane question (or it would be possible, if I starved), but...yes. I guess I'm just trying to find a ballpark midground.

could anyone help in that aspect?

loads of thanks,

kat :confused3

We (2 adults & 2 DD's) average betwwen £50 & £70 per week :goodvibes , I tend to do the shopping on my own so no little extra's get thrown in ;), no booze!, and the odd take away. £9 a week on school lunches, the other has packed lunches.:goodvibes

we spend between £150 and £165 per week. thats for 2 adults and 4 kids.
it doesnt matter where i shop or however i try to keep the cost down it always comes to the same amount.

I think it would very difficult to live on £50 a month. I am not saying that it couldn't be done but it would be very difficult.

The price for a loaf bread is between £1.00 to 28p depending on the quality and supermarket you are using.

If you want to know more prices try visiting the UK supermarker sites. The main supermarkets are Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons. People have also mentioned M&S (Marks & Spencers) and Waitrose these are slightly more expensive in price. Supermarkes such as Aldi and Lidl are cheaper.

I've just started doing my shopping online because so many people have told me I will save loads of money.

So far both weeks have come to £90 :confused3

we spend £20 a week for two of us

but we buy frozen meat as its easier for us

About £110 a week for the dog, DH, myself and DD (8) and £8.50 a week for school meals :goodvibes

I often have to pop out to do a 'mini shop' mid week too but DH and myself are at home all day so we don't have the expense of coffee shops and packed lunches etc :surfweb:

We spend for 4 of us around £65-70 a week plus our Roast chicken seperately and take aways. And Bread/Milk as the week goes on.

Between £50 - £80 for 2 adults and 2 moggies.

We tend to try to do a couple of big shops including cleaning things / washing tabs / big pack of catfood / lots of meat that we can freeze for the month etc. We will then have a couple of cheaper shops just for food.

Things that push the price up - Diet Coke (cans and bottles - it's my worst habit!), booze, and seafood.

Latarina - while at university I lived off about £20 per week, but that was 5 years ago and I didn't eat particularly well! Although I'm sure I could have drunk less and spent more on groceries... But no, I don't think 50 a month would be enough.

Ours sorts of happens in tiers, once every 8 months of so we go to cash and carry for cleaning stuff, general toiletries, tissues, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and nappies. This is not only cheaper but much more convenient.
Then once a month I do a Tesco on line which comes to approx 130.00 then every week I do bread, milk, fruit and veg etc which is usually 45.00 at M&S or Waitrose. My bill is bumped up by good quality juices, smoothies and organix snacks for the girls.
Nappies will finish soon so woo hoo.
DH is pretty good and doesn't really expect me to budget too much on food, we prefer quality meat and food and cut back on something else.
I have just found these great fridge bags which keep your fruit and veg fresher for longer by neutralising the gases that make them deteriorate. This means I can buy the variety of F&V that we love and nothing gets wasted. I got them from lakeland. worth the initial cost.
