How much do you spend on Co-workers gifts?

A couple of years ago, I talked everyone in the office into contributing to buy gifts from the Adopt A Family that our college sponsors. They contribute money and pick the tags off the tree. I buy the gifts and bring the items in along with wrapping paper and we wrap them up at the office. Everyone was really relieved to not have to buy gifts anymore and I'm happy to skip getting more candles and help someone who is in need.

One of my co-workers and I make a big platter of Oreo Truffles. We put it in the break room for everyone.

We used to exchange gifts (small ones) at my office, but several years ago we decided to do a Cookie Exchange instead. Everyone brings in a batch of their favorite cookies and we trade around so everyone gets some of each kind. It's a lot of fun and everyone seems to enjoy it. I think people are just looking for a way to be festive with co-workers.

I hate this too. Luckily, it is just a gift for the boss. Who works in another state, have been reporting to for just a few months. There are 3 of us and I thought $10 each for a $30 dunkin donuts gift card was good. They think it should be $50. Granted it is only $6 or so more, I just thinkj $30 would be appropriate.

Losing battle :sad2:

Stick to your guns. Personally, I think it's ludicrous for people to buy gifts for their boss.

At my old job everybody in my department brought something small in for everyone else. Ornaments, chocolates, etc. I liked to get the Bath and Body Works hand soaps when they were on sale ($2 each!). Who doesn't like/need hand soap even if it's just for the guest bathroom?

What if the boss gives you a gift? Mine gave each of us a $10 gift card. So giving $5 to give her something back doesn't seem unreasonable.

If the boss wants to give the employees gifts, that makes more sense. We do work for them and make them look good and they probably expensed it anyway. I don't believe that gifts necessarily need to be reciprocated.

I buy small things for my co-workers/friends and usually end up not being more that $2 or $3 each. One year I gave them all calenders from the dollar store. This year I got these cute candy cane trees that were only 0.50 each and also gave them each a cute pen. Total for my 10 friends was $15--and they all thought the candy cane tree was adorable.

It varies year to year. I work with all guys. This year I'm giving bags of old fashioned candy- .75 ea. Last year I gave $1 scratch offs and big wrapped brownies. Year before was tool kits $1.25 Walmart tool clearance (most loved).
When I worked in a big corporate office with mostly girls I did cute post-its & pens, mini Bath & Body Works anti-bacterial & lotions, ornaments, and chocolate. I try to keep gifts in the $1 range.
