Ok you all are curling my toenails with spending!!!
Thank you for your perspective. I was getting scared!
Last Jan we travelled with my DW's family. Her parents paid for the room and park tickets, we ended up with Free Dining due to constructions delays at AKV, we flew on points (plus about $300 in taxes), used DVC points to add two nights and spent a TOTAL of less than $200 on tips, other food and souvenirs. So, our budget for a 10 day trip was $250/person. (Granted, we had a lot of help with that one, but, I think your $1000 sounds reasonable.)
We're heading down again in 2 weeks (it's actually happening

). We are staying on points, renting a car and driving (2500 km each direction), we've planned to eat out 4-5 times and will do some microwave cooking in our studio. We worked out that we could do everything (rental car, gas, hotels on the road, food, park tickets, souvenirs) for about $1200 (i.e. $600/person). The decision we're still debating (but, I think we've basically decided to go with) is to add about $1000 to turn the tickets into 10day non-expiry hoppers +fun. We'll use 2 days this trip if we have hoppers, but, likely use 4 days if we don't get hoppers. So, the price difference starts to seem more worthwhile since we'll end up saving 8 days for the future.
Who knows, we may change our habits some day, but, for now, the primary reason we purchased DVC was that the kitchens help us save a fortune!
