How much do you pay for parking at HS?

There is no fee- only seniors can drive to school. They issue about 75 permits (there are about 350 seniors) and the rest of the kids have to park either on the side streets or next to the school is a supermarket and strip mall they park behind.

We pay $200 per student for them to ride the bus here, if they are less than 2 miles from the school, and only up until 6th grade. Any student 7th grade or above pays that fee no matter how near or far they live from the school. There is a family cap of $600, small consolation :/

At my school, seniors had to enter a lottery and had to pay $90 if they won a spot. Otherwise, you fought for a spot in the "side-lot" or parked on the street and walked up a hill.

That’s terrible. That would be a huge burden for so many families. The only people who pay for the bus around here go to private schools. We even bus for extracurriculars straight to the students doorstep.

My youngest graduated 10 years ago, I forget what we paid then, but checking their website now a parking pass is $25 a year. Private Catholic High School.

Public schools here don't charge. But our schools were all built in the 1950's and 1960's with acres of parking. With declining enrollment the last 15 years, there are a lot of empty spaces for students. Three schools here used to share a football stadium, mine being one of them. Two of them, including mine, had raised money and turned the unused parking lots into football stadiums.

When I was in high school, freshman couldn't get a pass but sophmore and up could. Seniors had like 3 or 4 rows dedicated to them.

The pass back then was $60 for the full year or $30 per semester. I don't remember if it was back then able to be prorated by quarter but looking it up now you can at least be prorated for a quarter basis. As I am saying that 13 years after I got my permit (second semester senior) and it's still the same price as it was back then.

The neighboring district (which is actually what my home is located in) may be as low as $30. It's a bit hard trying to find that information.

That's waived for seniors attending the offsite Math/Physics Institute since they are required to find their own transportation back to the main High School after 0 and 1st hour offsite.

Places are set up differently but I don't know how they could have free busing for all the students here. They do have free busing depending on how the district defines distance.

For instance the district I grew up and the district I'm assigned in now at my house if you were more than 2 1/2 miles away.
I don't know what it was back then but these days in the district I grew up in for this upcoming year:

• Early payment discount before July 12, 2019
• $160.00 per student, per semester or $320.00 per year for school year. Must be received or postmarked by July 12, 2019.
• Payments received after July 12, 2019
• $185.00 per student, per semester or $370.00 per student for the school year.
• Bus service is available at schools where 50 or more students are contracted to ride the bus, or where pay ridership has been mandated.

For the school district I'm in now has a graduated system for how many children:

Free or further reduced in price busing may be available to those who are on a reduced/free lunch program though in the district I'm assigned in.


Depending on how they calculate it my house wouldn't qualify for free busing for elementary, middle, or high school because we live too close. There are pros and cons obviously to living closely to your assigned schools.

The school does issue parking stickers and seniors get first dibs. Most kids don’t get their license until late junior year or senior year anyway, and no one is old enough as a sophomore.

It varies here when you consider what city you live in and school bonds you may be responsible for, etc on top of normal things like county and state portions of your property tax. But typical percentage is just over 55% of your property taxes go to your assigned school district.

I don't know how much has to do so with property taxes honestly at least I can't say with certainty that's why. They contract the transportation contract to a bus company in the area and without knowing just how much that contract is my guess is at least some of the costs is to help pay for that and it may help pay as a way to subsidize those who live outside of the milage and thus get free transportation and add in those who qualify for free or reduced lunch program who also get either free or reduced bus transportation.

The area is quite large and even with 3 big districts in the area there are likely many students who are far enough away from their schools to qualify for free busing. This also depends on school level too (which affects just how many schools there are in that school level).

When I was growing up my elementary school was within walking distance, my middle school and high school were well outside walking distance. I never rode the bus for elementary school but I did for middle and high school and both of those were free as I lived outside of the 2 1/2 miles.

By road my high school assigned to my house is 1.8 miles. Before that high school was completed a 2 years ago (I believe that's when it was completed), the high school that had been assigned was at the shortest distance 4.4 miles (though up to 5.9miles depending on the route taken). So new high school means we no longer qualify for free busing. But having an additional high school was really required to serve the expanding area.

Metro Atlanta - large public school. $50 per semester. Enough parking for all seniors, juniors and sophomores enter a lottery for the leftover spots!

No idea what the funds go for. All of our high schools already have a full time security guard funded by the county.

Wow that is terrible. We don’t pay for buses and every kid that live 1/4 mile from school gets a bus.

I also wondered about "falling sophomore/junior." I've heard of rising sophomores, but never falling ones.

$35/year at my kids' high school. (Price is not pro-rated if you buy mid-year.)

Probably kids failing and getting left back.

I think my daughter paid $15 or $20 for her parking permit. We didn't pay anything when DH and I attended the same high school years (and years and years!) ago.

It's $35 at our high school. They started charging the fee several years ago because there were more kids driving to school than there were spaces. Once they started the fee, a lot of kids stopped driving. The last few years I estimate that only about 75% of the spots in the student lot are filled. The traffic flow getting out of the student parking lot at the end of the day is HORRIBLE so a lot of parents no longer allow their kids to drive to school. My kids always waited about 10 minutes before even going to their car at the end of the day just to avoid the chaos.
