How Much Do We HAVE to Spend at Disney

I don't think military offer is that easy to get anymore. We haven't even able since February 2015. Last trip it was cheaper to go through orbitz than the military offer. Also the military discount has gone way down the past few years they don't even says on their page the percentages anymore because I am sure they aren't close to 40%. I also don't think that the salute tickets were really the best deal for them since they are staying for 7 days. They would need 10 that is not going to work.

Off topic, but I've NEVER called and not been offered a room with the discount. Even when we were driving down to Orlando earlier than expected. We just went in January and had plenty of rooms to choose from. You do, however, HAVE to be flexible. You may not be able to get into All Star Movies and might have to stay at All Star Sports instead. Certain rooms are never discounted (little mermaid at AOA) so that may be while you've had trouble.

Forget souvenirs. No harm in looking, but you can purchase most of them online now with the Shop Disney app after you get back home and stabilize your finances. Since you're driving, make a trip to Publix or Winn-Dixie (not Goodings!) to pick up some things...eat breakfast in the room. Try not to buy drinks in the park...you can always get free water anywhere there are soda fountains. Exception: if you're in Epcot, stop at Club Cool for some freebies. A couple other meal suggestions: Earl of Sandwich at Disney Springs is reasonable...if you happen to be there on a Monday, Moe's Southwest Grill has a $6 burrito/chips/drink combo that day. You can do it; don't let this ruin your trip...you'll still have a great time!

No that wasn't my trouble I knew LM rooms weren't discounted, since we have been taking advantage of the offer since 2008 I know the restrictions. The amount of rooms allocated to the promotion has gone down from previous years so has the discount. To a certain extent sure you can get some type of room for our last trip the only option was a CL at the BWI and not even for our whole stay. Just out of curiosity how many times have you called ?

Once in 2012 when we were pricing a potential honeymoon, but that was further back than you were looking.

6 more recently since June 2014. We've had to change dates before too and that's why I know how important it is to be flexible, because the resorts had to be changed. 3 calls were for stays/potential stays within 3 days.

I also know a couple ladies who are "Disney" travel agents and work almost exclusively with other military families. I have just never heard of someone not getting a room with the discount other than blackout periods. I don't know why you all have had so much more trouble, maybe because my family tends to travel at off peak times??

We don't have kids so we always try to avoid peak time. Before 2015 it was super easy and we always found rooms. Then it started getting harder and the discount became much less and I found better rates than military offer other places and avilibility. But also before 2015 the military offer was always the cheaper price, but not the case anymore.

I'm assuming the OP is staying in an AoA suite, don't they have a kitchen?
You won't need to spend any money for food in the parks, you have your car just run to the grocery store and get enough food to cover 3 meals on your last day. Its the end of your vacation, you don't need to eat any more WDW food by that point :cutie:

No it's "mini kitchen" it's a dorm fridge, a microwave and a sink. You could get easy mac or something ahead of time though to make in the room.

I thought they had a real kitchen, not sure easy mac for an entire day is appealing for the OP LOL.

Cold dishes would work though for one day.

A lot of our furniture/electronics/carpet was ruined. So we HAD money saved up for spending on the trip and a lot of that had to go to emergency repairs and things.

OK.

If I absolutely NEED money due to an emergency then we have ways of getting it. At the moment, I'd really rather not touch those ways (emergency credit card).

I just gotta ask...did replacing things after a huge storm and a flood NOT hit your threshold of "emergency"?

Hopefully flood insurance will reimburse us though!

Can't you call your agent and discuss your coverage? See what will be replaced/reimbursed? Then once you KNOW, put those *emergency* purchases on the emergency credit card, since it will be reimbursed, and then your cash reserves you had saved for this trip would have been saved.

I just wonder what is considered an emergency, if making emergency repairs after a flood isn't considered one?

Have you already factored in your regular grocery & gas budget for that week? I figure when I'm on vacation, there's an extra $50 in gas for our two cars and $150 in groceries that I'd normally be spending - that $ becomes part of our vacation spending. If you haven't - that might give you a little wiggle room.

Good reminder.

Also, your refillable mug should work at AOA during your time there. We did a split stay in November and ours worked through the end of our 2nd hotel stay even though we bought it at the first.

The mugs last for 14 days now. :)

If you are able to scrap up Money for Disney stuff. The walmart and Targets near buy have tons of Disney stuff cheaper. Also since you have a car there is a

Disney's Character Warehouse at the Orlando Premium Outlets .. Great Disney store outlet..

I definitely agree. I thought that Target and Publix had a lot, but then I ended up at a Walmart in February and WOW do they have a ton of Disney stuff. And so cheap.

You can get airfare credits or reschedule the flights to another date by paying a fee. Eat the fees and get a refund for the WDW package and room reservation.

Definitely a good thing to *look into*. Compare the fees and when the credits would expire to the cost of the tickets and when the two can travel. I don't have one feeling one way or the other, but I would find all the information and make a decision based on the finances. Who is to say the trip couldn't happen fairly soon, if postponed right now? Get a notebook, call the airlines to see what the fees would be and when they would expire. Check on future dates and the airfares you see now. Check around with other hotels. Call Disney to see IF they are willing to help you out at all, or what the change fees might be.

Most importantly, look at EXACTLY how your family might eat at disney, and see IF the dining plan actually makes sense for you!

We can argue all day about it, we can give our own situations...but what's important is YOUR situation. Did you choose the plan because it makes sense for you? Or did you choose the plan because that's what you thought is a good idea? Make a *financial* decision for the dining plan.

I never realized until now how much Dis'ers hate the dining plan.

It is already paid for. Tips are being covered by someone else.

Why would someone "ditch the dining plan" under those circumstances?

If doing the plan as-is works for them, then it works. But if it doesn't, then it might be a good idea to drop it and buy food OOP. The big question is IF the OP has actually checked! We don't know.

If they eat in the way the dining plan causes you to eat, then it works. If they are more like my family, where it doesn't really, then it makes no sense to have the plan.

Oh! Can you get doggy bags at disney restaurants? That would be awesome! I would definitely bring those back to the hotel for meals later!

The problem is keeping things fresh for the day without making the family sick. Do you have a soft cooler or two with some gel ice packs?

We make banana bread

Good idea. Make several loaves of that, and it's filling AND high in calories to keep you going.

my husband says he has an emergency credit card

That just stuck out at me. He says he has one? I hope you know the amount you can charge on it?

when MANY families are coming into Disney with packed lunches.. Just no one talks about really here on these boards.

Of course they do. We're reading the opposite threads. :)

If she calls up and says we had a flood, we have to make changes or we have to cancel disney is gonig to waive any change fees and help them out. There is a reason for this, it's not the people changing resorts for other discounts that the fee is designed to help stop.

They might very well do just that. I hope she checks!

We have a significant amount in savings and other things, but flat out refuse to touch it for anything it isn't meant for, Disney or not.

How about after a flood?

Target no longer offers pharmacy rewards :(.

And even more, in my area at least, Target Pharmacy is now CVS.

avoiding the stress of worrying what people order etc to me is worth keeping the plan that you have paid for.

But that works for you because that works with how you eat. Our family doesn't follow the dining plan model at all, so we would still be getting things OOP, or we would not be eating what we want to eat.

It doesn't depend on the fees to cancel, b/c military reservations can be cancelled with no penalty until 5 days prior and she can drop the dining plan without it changing the entire package; I've done it.

Hope she booked it that way!

Not sure she did. I think she said her tickets don't have hoppers, and someone said the military tickets ARE hoppers. And she seemed a bit surprised by the idea of Shades of Green. I hope this thread will open her eyes to things it didn't seem she knew about before.

I will still advocate cancelling AoA. I'll point out that the rack rate for an AoA suite over Memorial Day weekend (which is day 6 & 7 or her stay) is $461 for Cars or Lion King Suites and $471 for Nemo Suites. The Armed Forces Salute Military Discount for a value is 30%, so she's still spending $322-$329 per night on a suite (plus tax). Canceling AoA and moving off site would save them a bundle. Caribe Royal has a 1-bedroom quite with 2 queen beds and fold out couch for $135 per night plus resort fees through MouseSavers. Two nights, all in, is $348. Or ... vrbo has 2-bedroom condos for less than $100 per night (Bryan’s Spanish Cove is $228 for 2 nights, all in) and they OP can cook her last dinner in her condo.

I love that you actually checked for the OP.

I thought tipping housekeeping was pretty standard at any hotel. I would never think it was optional. Isn't there an envelope? I could be wrong about the envelope at WDW, we left a note and cash on the table-mousekeeping was always leaving us little adorable surprises.

It's not. There are plenty of people in this world who have no idea about tipping housekeeping.

And at WDW it is literally an untipped position. They should NEVER expect it, because that's what their job description said, that it's not a tippable position.

No, there is no envelope.

I can't believe people would tell someone not to go on a trip bc they won't be able to buy Disney food.

No one has said that. :)

Can you imagine driving off site to McDonalds the last day of your vacation?

I can't imagine McDs, but we get SO sick of Disney food and prices that we often, happily, go offsite for food. OUR personal favorite is Sweet Tomatoes. Sign up for their emails and they often send discount codes.

If she has, then she didn't use the military discount of 30-40% off room rates and the ability to buy substantially cheaper tickets. I surely hope she didn't do that.....

Same. But I really don't think she booked with a military discount. I feel like she would have said that if she had.

I certainly understand why she doesn't want to change anything. It's a lot of work to make all your plans and it's fun to dream about how wonderful it will be staying at one resort or another and how much your kids will LOVE it. I totally understand dreaming about the "mouse life".

Totally.

Heck, we kept a planned trip to Disneyland when DH was in a flurry of job interviews because his department was being moved to ND and they hadn't offered him a position there (aka a layoff). I get it. I just hope the OP finds the costs of changing things around or even delaying the trip.

I also hope she calls her insurance agent to find out more about what will be covered and what won't be.

Didn't read through everything so not sure if this has been addressed already, but I think you're refillable mugs may work for your entire stay. Unless they have changed things I believe they are coded to work for 14 days from the first day of your dining plan.

Cancel the trip. You can get airfare credits or reschedule the flights to another date by paying a fee. Eat the fees and get a refund for the WDW package and room reservation. If you literally will only have $100 to spend on this trip, you can't afford to go.

I'm not concerned that she only has $100 spending. I'm concerned that she only has $100, period. I mean if finances are THAT tight that she only has $100 to spare - no, she should not be going. Any number of things could go wrong that they need that money for. What then? If my budget only had a cushion of $100...

If you asked me what I would personally do in these circumstances, I would cancel the trip and eat the cancellation fees for the hotel, DDP, and airfare (for only 2 people of the party). It wouldn't be worth it to me to constantly worrying about balancing my idea of a vacation and finances.

Bumbershoot, people really did say to cancel :confused3

You're way over simplifying what was said. No one said to cancel because "she can't buy Disney food". Those of us who suggested canceling (myself included) were suggesting post-poning because they just had a major house/financial disaster with an uncertain future with regards to the insurance help etc.., a very tight budget with very limited funds and in the event of anything else coming up they'll need to rely on debt. The suggestion came from a place of concern for financial responsibility/security, not frivolous spending.

The discount is 40% Deluxe resorts and villas only. It's 35% moderates, 30% values.

It is not hard to get. We have used it every year since 2009. Going in August and booked last month. Lagoon view room at Grand Floridian was $363/night with the discount. Beats the "summer awakening" room discount by $60 per night...

The discount rate varies it is not a set 40% ,35%, 30% like other years you can go check the Disney website. We have not been able to get a good rate the thought the military offer since 2015. For our April stay Coronado was cheaper for us to go through orbitz than the price Disney gave us. There are other ways to get great rate than the the Disney website.

I've never seen it listed on the website... are you calling the reservation line?

UPDATED: My trip is coming up on the 22nd and we've had some unexpected financial issues (our house flooded). We have the regular dining plan for the first 5 days of our trip, and then we're staying at AoA for the last two days with no dining plan. My question is, we're looking at REALLY tight finances during the trip. Like maybe we'll have a hundred dollars to spend outside of money for gas while we're there. My mom is coming and since we covered her trip she is paying tips at the TS restaurants.

It seems like most people I see talk about needing a lot of extra money while at Disney, and I'm wondering if we're going to be okay with what we have? I've got some overtime hours I'm going to work to try to make some extra. If there's an absolute emergency (someone mentioned car troubles) then we can get some emergency money.

We live on a tight budget from day to day, we're very careful with money. We definitely had more than enough saved up but this flood really devastated our house. Flood insurance should kick in, but we don't know when that will happen yet. Some people might think it's irresponsible to take this trip, but it's something that the kids and all of us have looked forward to all year and it would be a really bright spot in our summer.

Any tips on saving money in the parks, saving money in a couple of weeks before we go, or anything like that would be appreciated! Thanks!

Not sure on how many in your party?

Are you staying at 2 resorts? the way its written it seem like you will be at 2 resorts. Your dinning plan is good till 11:59 on departure day. So I am wondering if you can use some of them for your departure day like for breakfast or lunch before you check into AoA?? Anyone thoughts can this be done?? - I can't see why not, you can rethink your current dinning choices and maybe share some meals, so you will have some for departure day from your 1st stay. Also if you have leftover snack credits at the QS at the resort you can use them for muffins or pastries for breakfast, if you have enough you might have enough for the next day as well.

When at AOA is it 2 nights 3 days or 1 night 2 days?

Could you move to a value ( any of the All Star resorts family suite if you have more than 5 might work) to save on cost and maybe use the difference to add the dinning plan to the last days.? So combine stays to all one resorts? I would get on the phone with Disney and see what they can suggest. With everything thing paid for and if your not wanting a refund, you could tell them you just need to switch around something and see what they can come up with.

As far as the insurance you need to be the wheel that makes noise, they will drag their feet, you will have to light a fire to get results..

Since you paid for your mom, maybe she might be willing to buy dinner one night, or maybe she plans to.. I would talk to her.

As far as trying to save quickly - do a clean out your pantry, refrigerator and freezer meals, take your lunch, and no going out to eat. Roll change, have a quick garage sale ( I normally make around at least 125.00 to 150.00 easy on thrown together garage sale, and I have made up to 400.00 before with a couple of big items. Take clothing items to like a Kid to kid shop, they pay cash for good clothing and other kid items. DD made 147.50 2 months ago, even if you make only 20.00 buck that's more Disney dollars.

Not sure why you will need gas? Are you renting a car?.. If so maybe DME might be the way to go and this would cut cost of a rental, and gas out of the equation.
