How much data did you use?

Curious if anyone has only used data for the Disney App? How much data did you use per a day? I'm thinking when I book genie+ I would use data, so curious if my personal data will cover it :)

I know there is wifi. I am just wondering if anyone has used their data. Mostly for Disney app because I heard Genie+ tends to be a little happier with it. Just trying to get a gauge.

I’m trying to figure out how much to buy too because I don’t want to be on wifi when I try to grab rides at 7am ( especially if Guardians will be a ILL pick!). I think I’m going with 4gb for the week. I’ll use wifi for browsing etc so I’m probably overestimating what I will need.

If you're just using it for the 7:00 a.m. window, then it will be very minimal. I can't quantify it because I don't know their systems and how much it's pulling and I didn't check usage because I have 70GB and was roaming (Rogers customer in Canada and roaming in the U.S.). But my data usage for the entire trip was definitely less than half a GB (maybe even lower). But literally you only need to get off of wifi for the initial 7:00 a.m. time period (when all of WDW is grinding the Disney wifi to a crawl and when we used it we got into a death spin stall). We experimented on this specifically last month and there is a huge difference when using data vs Disney in-room wifi, at least for us there was. It was night and day. But after the initial 7:00 a.m. silliness, the crush is off of wifi so it was okay to use for anything else.

I didn't use my own wifi when I was there in October however I am with Bell and there is an option to "roam like home" where you can use the GB that come with your plan for $10 a day. Assuming you may not need it daily, perhaps your cell provider has something similar?
I was with Freedom when I went last time and purchased a travel plan just in case but didn't really need to use it. I did purchase ILL$ for RoTR at 7 am, the rest I was able to get later in the day when I wanted to. I am not sure what it's like right now trying to get them at 7 though, I was there the first week it opened so things have changed.

You may want to check on the "regular" part of the boards though, I am sure many people from the US also use their own wifi and perhaps they can provide an answer (bigger pool of posters).

We have our mobility through telus. We each have 20 gig of data (just for reference)

We went in February. They have a flat rate of 11.00/per day capped at 120.00. I needed to be available for work inquiries, and other things, so I did use the roaming package. I used available wifi around me if it was available - but would still be roaming if we were driving around. I was worried about overages and going over in my data and having the nightmarish huge bill upon returning home.

Nope - I didn't really use anymore data than I did when I was in Canada. I only used less than 4 gig's of date while there - so not bad - and I still had lots of data that I didn't use. I did pay the maximum ( 120.00 as we were there 10 days) But I was glad to be hooked up to data and NOT relying on free wifi where I could get it. I did that one trip....never again! I'll pay the extra money to use my data when we are traveling. It is something I will pay and factor into the cost my trips.

I will be using the roam like home. I have 12 gigs of data, just wondering if that's enough I have 14 days. Was trying to get a feel for how much data the app sucks up. I figure it shouldn't have me using over 10 but figure someone might have the answers :)

When sitting in the room in the evening I would plan on using wifi. Just know I will be using my data during those important 7am times.

I can't help you with data, but we just got back from a trip where we relied completely on wi-fi using an ipod. It worked amazingly well every time. At the park entrance, walking into the park, on the bus, it didn't matter. We never did it in the hotel room though. We got everything we wanted and more. If we couldn't get what we wanted at 7am then we kept refreshing between 7:10 and 7:20. This is for both ILL and LL. On our last day we got SDMM, FOP and MMRR within the first 10 minutes. We then walked on ROTR near the front.

I expected it to suck but it was amazing. We used it all day long stacking and we would recharge each night in the room. Using Wi-Fi gets a bad rep in my opinion. The only issue we had was being on the skyliner right at 7am one time. We got what we wanted though by 7:15.

I use for more than just MDE. For a 5 day trip recently I used 2 GB (I use Airalo eSIM for data in the US) For the most part I try and stay on Disney Wi-Fi, but it is not always that reliable)

Thanks. This makes me feel a bit better :)

We (my daughter and I) tried Virgin Plus's Roam Like Home in November and, it was a big fail. It connects through a US provider but, that connection was never made and, we never did get to Roam. We were refunded for the days we were charged for, when we were trying to connect. They could see we were unsuccessful but, couldn't explain why or apologize for it either. Luckily, one of our group was with another provider and her Roam worked like a charm. Poor thing though, she became the "go to" for all things data!

I'm on Virgin Plus, had no problem with data when I used roaming last December in Phoenix.

Was considering using Airalo or similar this summer but was curious how you made calls with a data-only plan.

We made roaming calls on our phone (to Virgin Plus, trying to get it sorted, unfortunately as we were starting early in the day - 7a.m. - they didn't answer), not data. Hence the need for Virgin Plus to reverse the Roam charges relating to us calling them unsuccessfully to try to get it worked out.

I'm happy you had no problem with data. It wasn't our experience and I certainly hope it won't be that of others on Virgin Plus but, I wanted to let people know our experience so they can, perhaps, prepare. Not sure how but, it's a head's up based on not just my but, my daughter's separate Virgin Plus account Roam experience at Disneyland.

How does this work? Is it really easy? It sounds too easy!! 🤣🤣🤣

It would be great to have a simple solution in the US.

If your phone supports eSIM you can get data for as low as $4.50 US for 1 GB. Airalo.com I first tried them out in Jan 2020 when I ran out of data on my Roam Mobility SIM. Then Roam shutdown so I have used Airalo for all my Disney trips since. It's Data only, iMessage still works. Easy to use and top up if you run out of data. The app shows you how much you have left.

So we have been looking for a new one since Roam went under. This is a virtual sim? Do I still keep my phone number since this is just data? is US good for all including Hawaii?
Cant seem to see a lot on their web,,,thanks if you have answers.

Yes, eSIM, no physical SIM.

Yes, you keep your phone number. I have Public Mobile, I can still receive Text Messages, I just can't send or make calls unless I add US Calling. But, I leave it set as my Default Voice Line for text messages (ie the ADR ones to say your table is ready)

It works in all 50 states..
