How much are tix for your DC's dance recital?

Our dance studio requires each family to purchase a minimum of 4 tickets at $12 each. My dd's costume for her one class was $65. Then I had to pay $52 for another costume. That was not expected. She just outgrew her ballet shoes, which cost me another $18. Plus she gets the recital t-shirt, that's $12. The pictures will be about $35 and the video of the recital will be $25 (no pictures or video allowed). Just this week we found out that she was given a special role in the opening and closing number which will require I put together a costume for her to be the Chiquita Banana lady. Oy vey!! But she loves it and has helped her grow her self-confidence. So we pay it.

Our tickets are free but we paid a $75 recital fee on top of a $100 costume charge. The recital is split into 2 times & there are about 30 dances in each. We're disappointed in the costume - it's a purple leotard w/ shiny trim & a separate tutu - the leotard is a violet shade & trim is different purple while the tutu is plum! It does not look like it matches AT ALL. DH commented on it, which says a lot!

We're not allowed flash photos or videos but can buy the DVD for $35. Pictures were reasonable, we paid $12 for just a 5x7 & class photo. I'll do my own for family members.

I wish they would just do a final dance in the studio & be done with it. I really don't want to spend most of a Sat. in recital. DD is torn between softball & dance for next year & I think I'm going to recommend softball. It's cute and all but it's been an expensive year.

I own a dance studio and I just want to chime in here.

It is a business and we have to make money at it. We spend ALL year putting these recitals together, it's a big part of our job and if you work you expect to be paid for it yes?

I only charge $7 a ticket and $45 - $60 for costumes. We do not allow pictures or video at the recital as it becomes a Papparatzi ZOO so we do hire a proffesional video company to come in as a courtesy for the parents who would like a video. Studios typically make very little on recital DVD's or pictures. I know what I make on pictures barely covers my staffing for picture days.

Recital costume orders take hours and hours and hours ...then when they come in they take hours and hours and hours to sort. At my price range of 45 - 60 I mark up very little and would probably faint if I figured out my profit margin vs the time I take doing everything.

The High School Auditoriums cost quite a pretty penny too. Rent, custodians, theatre tech ... air conditioning! (Yes, a lot charge you extra for that.) Then you have to pay your staff on top of that because they don't work for free.

I was once told by another studio owner that your recital should make you enough money to live on over the summer. (HA HA HA. I need to raise prices.) BUT ... in a way that makes sense because you would think something that takes 10 months out of your life could support you for 2 or 3.

All that being said ... if you are at a good dance studio your children are learning lessons far beyond how to Plie' or shuffle hop step. Lessons that will aid them far into adulthood. Confidence, team work, commitment, poise, leadership...and so much more.

The owner of our studio gets the recital place for free since she is the high school cheerleading coach also. I think she is very resonable as far as price. I don't think she makes a thing off pictures or video. Everything is optional except the tution,costume and tickets.

I'd have to check my e-mail...but not more than $15. We perform at a less expensive venue though and she truly only charges what is necessary to reserve the venue and tech help from the time of the first dress rehearsal until the last show.

I don't mind paying at all. I certainly wouldn't expect her to pull it out of her pocket. Having done community theater in the same venue--we had to charge for those tickets as well. Rental space is not cheap.

On a brighter note--recital is totally optional and if you opt to be a class mom and assist with the class, you don't have to pay, but you still get to see your child perform their routine.

Parents say this but when I worked for a studio that had every other year recitals ... a lot of people only took classes on recital year or dropped out early on non-recital years. (Something as business owners we can't afford.)

I had two classes that I started in the spring so they didn't have time to prepare for the "big" recital ...and some of the parents were dissapointed that they only had an in studio presentation.

Grass is always greener.

If it's a good studio you will find the production worth it in the end. I find 90% of my parents feel this way after the first recital is over "Miss A we had noooo idea!!!!"

See now I wanted the recital. Most 2/3 year old classes around here don't do a recital, just one in the studio, which is hard to cram all the parents into. The cost is expensive in the end when I add it up, but I will continue to do it (and probably complain lol) as long as she wants to do it!

Our recital is $14 a ticket, but you can save one if you volunteer with the younger dancers in the back. I guess you wouldn't need the ticket then. It is $80 costume. Pictures there are various packages and we just order the cheap $12 one with a group/individual and a magnet. There is a dvd of the performance for $35, but we usually tape the dress rehersal so we don't have to buy the dvd.

Odd was asked if she wanted to do the dance camp this summer to audition for the competition team. We had already scheduled something for the week of camp and dd said that was a sure thing vs. trying out for competition. I am glad because it sounds like it would be $$$ and 6-7 hours of dance a week! She has other interests too.

$20 per ticket here. What really gets me, is that if my DD's want to come out after their dance and watch the rest of the show, they also need a ticket! I find that crazy since they are part of the show. Everyone age two and up must have a ticket, even if they are going to sit on mom's lap.

Many expenses are necessary and not really money-makers, but a 2 year old on mom's lap needing a ticket?

This is DD's 5th year at her dance school and last. We only stayed this year so she could receive her 5 year trophy.

From dance to soccer to bowling, tennis, golf, whatever. Starting an activity at 2/3 might be fun for the socialization, and some kids WILL continue. But all too often, they grow tired of it - whatever activity, often due to starting it way too early, and then having too many activities at the same time. They get bored or so burned out that before middle school, they don't want to do ANY of it.

Its good to expose them to every opportunity. But wait just a little, and not every activity at one time.

This is my daughter's first year in dance and she is in the 3 year old baby ballet class. Her costume was $55 and we payed a $25 recital fee which includes entrance to the show for as many people as I want to bring. We are not allowed to take videos/pictures for the recital but we can at the dress rehearsal. I spent $55 on pictures but I could've spent less if I wanted to and I was really happy with the way they came out. They actually have four different recitals at the school which I like since I won't have to be there all day and I'm hoping it won't be too crowded. They split the smaller kids into two different mini recitals and then they have a jr recital and a sr recital.

They also had a Christmas recital which we didn't attend since we weren't here and that was $15 per family and no costumes since they just put on their regular class attire and the school provided tutus, jingle bells, etc. They said it was a good way specially for the smaller ones to get used to being on stage. I'm sure my daughter won't have problems being up there though since she loves being in the spotlight.

My DD tickets are 8.00 if you buy them on the pre-sale day(yes people line up early in the Am-I go midmorning for a sale that starts at 4-it is like a big party with all the moms)otherwise they are 10. The main floor is reserved seating, and the balcony is first come first served. The recital is held in a neighboring small city's civic center, very nice venue-not a bad seat in the house. We pay no recital fee. Can purchase a DVDfor 30, optional tshirt(for finale) 15.00, costumes for 4 dances were roughly 300. Pictures were what I wanted to spend and for 3 costumes it wasn't over 45.00 for an individual and group picture of each,plus wallets, plus a keychain with 3 of her friends. She is also a member of the comp team, which she loves. Along with the 2 comps we did this year, we also danced at halftime at a Cleveland Cav's game, and will be doing the Cleveland's areana(can't remember name) football teams half time show on June 4th. Possibly a performance at King's Island. We do two shows and afternoon and and an evening performance on a Sat. All students are in both shows, close to 50 numbers, including Production number and finale. She is 15 and has been dancing since she was 3. I look forward every year to the comp season and recital-love to see what new and innovative ideas our instructor comes up with. Most of our comp dancers are also involved in school activities as well, and most only take dance for 3-4 hours a week, yet the comp dancers continuously bring home Platinum Awards, with some HighGold's thrown in . The seem to consistently place in the top overall awards, along with many special awards. I can't imagine how well they would do if they danced every night like some studios require of their comp dancers. Yes I do put out some bucks but what she has gotten in return is amazing. the confidence, the poise, the ability to be in front of a crowd, to name a few. She has danced twice at Cleveland Cavs game, last year danced on a Carnival Cruise ship, along with many local events and venues. She has studied at Conventions in Chicago, Toledo, and Detroit. Next year good possibility she will dancing at an all inclusive in Cancun.

When people comment on the expense i gently tell them it is no different as the expense some sports require, such as AAU and AYBT ball, or club volleyball. Plus you can't be cut from dance, maybe from comp, but at our studio once on comp you are on it unless you want off.
When she graduates in 3 years I know I will miss it. Oh and I dont' make her do this, it is her choice, when she was younger she played soccer and basketball and made her choice of dance. She is also a football cheerleader, and a member of the track team. She also is an honor roll student.

I put in my thread that my daughter was quitting dance after 5 years, but it also said she is not quitting altogether just the particular studio she attends now.

Yes, she was 3 weeks shy of her 2nd birthday when she started to dance. It was a mommy and me class. She is 6 now and in her 5th year of dance. My daughter loves dance. She takes 2 jazz classes and gymnastics 2 nights a week.

We are quitting the particular studio because the owners are so stinkin' disorganized. I can't stand it anymore. One month before the recital and I still don't know the exact date.

If it was up to my daughter she would be on the competition team and is none too happy with me that I won't let her on it or try out for the gymnastics competitve team. But at 6 yo I feel she is too young for such a committment. She plays soccer and softball as well. I told her in a couple years if she still wants to try-out OK, she can.

In the fall she will continue gymnastics at her new school and pick-up hip hop too. She isn't quitting dance, just her original studio she started at.

let's see...recital tickets - $13.75 each, bought online. costume - $82.00. pictures - $52.00. DVD of performance - $20.00 (unless it goes up this year-won't find out until dress rehearsal. DD's dance teacher writes an original production each year and copyrights it, so no one is allowed to record video of it except the guy she hires.) snacks for backstage during show - $5.00-$10.00. i'm sure there will be more, but i can't think of anything else offhand.
i'm hoping this will be DD's last year of dance, since she's joined band at school, and she really doesn't take dance seriously enough to advance any further (she's almost 13).

I disagree...the girls in DD's class LOVE it and all follow the routine pretty well for their age They also do a story, play with the music sticks, parachute and a little tumbling and trampoline. It's not JUST dancing for an hour.

1 free Mom ticket but anyone else including the dancer taking up a seat has to pay. The owner does allow lap sit if it is a small child- but you better not save a seat between people for her/him

It still works out to be a bargain activity for us. 3 lessons a week is only $45 a month!

ours are $19 the day they go on sale, $21 after that. You do get to pick out your seats when you buy them, so that is great. I think the rental costs are going up next year by a lot, so that's not good. Costumes are $65 each roughly, although they will use the same leotard for two dances, but with different bottoms (skirt or pants) That saves about $40 each costume. With three dds in dance, they have 11 costumes between them. It adds up fast!
