I have no problem with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I am able to figure per centage and know geometry terms. I would need a reminder of the formula for some geometry problems.
I have not had a math class since 10th grade in 1969. I have a master's degree, so you are able to make it through college and post graduate studies without math. Oh, my master's is in education.
For someone that has never taken an "advanced" math class I do pretty well. I'm a bookkeeper at work, so I work with numbers a lot. I can read a blue print, find the 3 dimensions, relate it to raw material, etc. I wouldnt call it doing geometry, but I get by. I can't write an algebra equation properly, but I can come up with numbers that work.
I have a learning disability in math -- can't do math skills beyond a 6th grade level.
But for whatever reason, if I dial a phone number a few times, I'll remember it for a while. If I dial a phone number for a long length of time, I remember it for life.
I get by, just beyond the basic four. And I have my own way of figuring things out. There is NO WAY anybody would teach anybody to do math the way I sometimes do it.
1/2 way through 8th grade I transfered from a Private to public school and took over the math class from the teacher. She said I explained thing better tothe kids so she gave me an A and let me teach for her.
In the 9th grade I won B-More cities Math bee for Highschools and almost got beat up by a 12th grader.
I have tutored many of family friend kids to help them along.I need to reference so material but once I do it's like riding a bike and I breese right along.
Now ask me about english and spelling and I stick my head in the sand like an Ostrich.
I got through 4 calculus classes and 1 statistics course in college with a B average. I voted, I do pretty well in math. These days, I'm still keeping up with my 5th grader and not even breathin' hard. Stll "do pretty well" in math.
I had to vote "I can teach Math...." as I'm subbing in a long term 6th grade Math class. I will be teaching in this subject until the end of January. Last night I spent several hours deciding just how I was going to teach decimals for today's lessons. Wish me luck!!!
I, also, taught a Math class to college students years ago.
I"m a mathlete--though my last mathclass was Calc II my first semester of college.
I'd have to study up a bit--but I could go back to mathlete status for the the high school math classes.
Same deal with the diagramming sentences thread--except in that case, I can't remember how to do it at all. I'd have to look up the correct way to do it and then it woudln't be a problem.
