how many suitcases will Air Tran allow?

We returned out big daddy suitcases for much smaller sized cases (due to size restrictions), this is a big bummer as i want to take an empty with us.

3 adults 1 large child, and 1 empty. I was thinking we may need to take more than 5 suitcases, 6 would be perfect (were going to disney for 9 days and the gulf for 8) Is this allowed or do you think im on the road to over packing

You can check 2 bags per person. You can carryon 1 per person (within the size limits) plus 1 personal item (small, fit under the seat).

I honestly think you need to reevaluate just how much stuff you really need to bring. If you have access to laundry facilities, you don't need more than one checked bag per person, even for a more than 2 week trip. 6 suitcases is an awful lot to lug around on vacation (and why check an empty suitcase?)

for the stuff i want to buy while im there and in Siesta Key. But your probably right, 1 extra suitcase should do. thanks!
