I was just readkng throught Disney Insider and seen this little tidbit

I've been to Disney World and there are several hotels to choose from. Which one was the first to be built there? How many rooms are there? And is Disney World considered the biggest resort in the world?

Katielu R. -Knoxville, TN

The Contemporary Resort and the Polynesian Resort opened first in 1971. Today, there are almost 25,000 rooms in Walt Disney World hotels, making it by far the largest resort in the world.

Ok so lets take a avg of $100 a night time 25,000 rooms in peak season. Did someone say Disney was hurting?? Where I just dont see it. Speaking of making them hurt, Ive been there 4 times already this year and have 2 more trips planed before the year is up. Usually only go for 2 days.

With what Disney gives you for your money I am amazed they do not charge more. Not everyone can get to WDW as much as some of us. Travel due to 9/11 and the overall economy has been bad. I imagine it takes a lot of cash to keep Disney as magical as it is. When they have empty rooms at other times of the year I don't think peak season makes up for it.

I always wanted to know that, but one thing you have to realize. With all those rooms I'm sure they are never all full.

I could be wrong, but I would find it hard to believe.

Does anyone out there know what percent they are full during the different times of the year??

I have seen Disney change so much in just the past few years. We use to be able to go Thanksgiving weekend just a few years ago (Pre 9/11) on a FL seasonal pass. Now that and just about every weekend that is a holiday is blacked out.

You use to be able to walk around with few crowds for the Extra Hour. Now its just as busy as regular time.

I remember staying at the BC for only $70 a night.

good piece of trivia there.

of course...the burning question for me is "How many hotels are IN ORLANDO and how many rooms are in the city total?"

I'd be interested to see THAT number!

The value resorts are sold out the most, but since Pop Century opened (aka 2800 more value rooms) this doesn't happen as much. Moderates sells out occasionally, deluxe resorts rarely. Only during Christmas and New Year are all the resorts sold out.

But I disagree with the poster that Disney resorts are reasonably prices. The value resorts are okay, but not cheap. Paying $250/night for a standard room at a deluxe resort is outrageous. And the cheapest room at the Grand... $339/night. I cannot imagine spending $2000 a week for a hotel room... add in the the high price of food/merchandise/park tickets... Disney vacations can be very expensive. Growing up my father & I only stayed on property once for 2 nights. It never made sense to spend that much for a room that we basically just slept in. IMO only - I realize some people think if they're going to spend money on a vacation they might as well go all out.
A friend of the family of 4 back home recently spent $15,000 on his last one week vacation to Disney. :earseek: I barely earn that in a year!

Disney USED to enjoy the highest occupancy rate in the industry, somewhere around an average of 80%. Of course this was pre- 9/11.

Even with the prices they charge, I still think it's the highest occupancy rate in the industry, but no longer at around 80%.

I've stayed in Howard Johnson's and Days Inn's for $90 and $125 per night, so $77 per night really isn't a bad deal to me at all, especially when you consider everything that you get. (theming, service, transportation, 3 pools, luggage assistance, free parking at the parks, etc)

On a side note, 25% of all of Florida's hotel rooms are Disney resorts.

Being the geek that I am, I looked it up on several websites and found the following:

1920 - All-Star Movies
1920 - All-Star Music
1920 - All-Star Sports
2880 - Pop Century
2112 - Carribbean Beach
1967 - Coronado Springs
2048 - Port Orleans Riverside
1020 - Por Orleans FQ
1293 - Animal Kingdom Lodge
0603 - Beach Club
0378 - Boardwalk Inn
1007 - Contemporary Resort
1509 - Dolphin
0900 - Grand Floridian
0847 - Polynesian
0887 - Shades of Green
0758 - Swan
0728 - Wilderness Lodge
0630 - Yacht Club
0205 - Beach Club Villas
0383 - Boardwalk Villas
0761 - Old Key West
0184 - Saratoga Springs
0136 - Wilderness Lodge Villas
0407 - Fort Wilderness Cabins
0788 - Fort Wilderness Campsites

For a Grand Total of 28,191 accomodations!!!!

This does not include the fact that Saratoga Springs is working on adding 644 accomodations, there is a possibility that Pop Century will add another 2880 rooms, and there are the 12 Treehouse Villas that are still there but not being used.

Yes, I was bored a year or so ago and found a place where it had room totals for all of the hotels, although you had to go to a seperate page for each hotel, and I thought it was over 25,000.

I believe Orlando has around 120,000 rooms, second to Las Vegas. So Disney has about 20% of all Orlando rooms, not sure how many rooms are in all of Florida

How much you are willing to pay is all relative. When I was just out of college and making 15,000 a year. I would stay in $25/night hotel rooms in Kissimee. Now I am making signifcantly more money, I am willing to pay more for a room. There are differences beween a $75 dollar a night room and a $200 a night room. The Deluxes are not competing against the Days Inn of the world but the Hyatt Regency's. Look at some of the prices they charge.

Disney has 25% of the rooms in the entire state of Florida.

Tyler-How can that be? Are you saying there are only 115,000 hotel rooms in ALL of FL? Combining SOUTH BEACH, ORLANDO, NAPLES, PANAMA CITY...KEY WEST...and all the cities in between there has GOT to be more than 115,000 hotel rooms in FL.

That's the statistic that's been thrown around all over the place, including on the news (they mentioned it during the hurricanes)

I think it "Disney Property" included Shades of Green, Swan and Dolphin, as well as Hotel Plaza.

CLkelly included those hotels in her calculations that came up with 28,000 rooms in WDW property. I just cannot believe that there are only 115,000 hotel rooms in all of FL....are you sure they did not say 25% of ORLANDO hotel rooms?

I had been cooped up in a room at Pop Century for 48 hours at that point, and cabin fever had set in, so I guess it's possible.

And don't forget about Vero Beach, those are also Disney rooms as well...

I did not include the Hotel Plaza Boulevard Hotels which are on Disney Property and they are:

Doubletree - 246
Embassy LBV - 333
Holiday Inn - 323
Grosvenor - 626
Best Western LBV - 325
Hilton - 814
Royal Plaza - 394

That adds another 3061 accomodations

Vero Beach adds 172 accomodations

Celebration Hotel adds 115 accomodations

And with approximately 840 staterooms per Disney Cruise Ship that brings the total accomodations on Disney Property in Florida to 33,219.

So Disney could have the 20% figure for Florida.

That would be due to the fact you are only looking at the revenue side and not the expenditure side to keeping 25,000 rooms open, staffed, cleaned, repaired, electricity, tolietries, etc. Then average in restaurants, the cost of food, pools which cost millions to build and insurance. The list goes on and on. ::yes::

Your originally said 25%, not 20%.

Anyway, 33,000 is not 20% or 25% of 370,000. I guess it is a little under 10%. Still an impressive number.
