400. Three contracts. I'd like a small contract of about 50. Holding off though

Started at 150 in 2007. Now at 545 ( will be 595 when my current resale is complete)

SSR - 150 (2007, Direct)
VGC - 50 (2009 or 10, Direct)
VGC - 50 (2017, Resale)
AKV - 75 (2018, Direct)
AKV - 100 (2019, Resale)
SSR - 120 (2021, Resale)
AKV - 50 (2022, Resale) ----> In progress, passed ROFR, pending delayed closing

I am thinking VDH is possibly in my future. And I would love some Epcot resort area points, but can't get past the 2042 end date.

For those with 1000 or more, just curious , how do you use the points? Always get 1 bedroom? Rent half?

We have 300, would love more but not the dues bill. Most years 300 is enough. Years we bring family, we have a friend that we rent from.

We have ~1400 points that we accumulated starting around 5 years ago. When we bought we had one kid and booked studios or 1BRs. Now we have three kids and typically book 2BRs, and will sometimes book 1BRs if they have the new Murphy beds. We’ll occasionally book a GV if we have others joining us or if we want to splurge. Planning on adding more points at VDH and possibly Poly2 in the next few years.

In the last couple of years we ended up going to DLR more often since we can drive there, and we’ve been using the bulk of our points at VGC at the 7 month mark. We love that resort but it is very point hungry (we just did a week in a 2BR and it was over 600 points!).

Our youngest is not yet two, so we’re planning for lots of family vacations until the kids’ schedules make it harder to travel, and I hope to keep using our DVC long after they’re grown. But I hope they’ll still want to go with us in 20 years!

Well we didn't buy until after our kids were out of the house and they still come. But honestly, we let them tag along only to carry the grandchildren's luggage.

I have 0 points, but on the fence to buy. I have always loved Disney, have been going since high school, and now I have a teen and a 20-something. Although the recent changes make me sad, they won't be forever. Change is a given, so I know Disney will bounce back. I don't know where to buy. I've always loved Poly, but wonder if I should wait for the tower. Or maybe choose a cheaper place (OKW) and risk booking at the ritzier places? Oh, and I've never rented a DVC room, so I don't even know what it's like to stay in one in any of the resorts. Shall I become addicted like everyone? Talk me off the ledge.

We are a family of three so we generally get a 1 BR. When DS graduated college we stayed at the GFV in a lake view 2 BR as a present to him. He is away from home now so I put him on the deed to use as he sees fit.
I stayed there for a two day meeting by myself last week and only got a Boardwalk View Studio but for two nights it was perfect. Did not go into the parks. We only have 300 points and frankly don't need more. I understand larger families need more points if they regularly visit. We also use a Disney Visa which gives us 1000 reward points per year and pays for all our food and purchases.

We just bought our 1st contract of 150 direct points at VGF yesterday! We plan to go 5 nights in 2 studios (at Poly in March 2023) or a 2br somewhere else for now, and bring the grandparents to help with the kids. I think if that plan keeps up we will be adding on more a year or two from now.
Welcome Home!

250 and that's great for me. Either one longer trip and banking points, or two medium trips every year.

We only have 150 CCV, but plan on going every other year for now so 300 is mostly enough for what we want to do. We plan to do other things in the off years. If that changes im sure we would add more points.

8 contracts, 5 resorts, 1750 points. We use enough for two trips a year, and rent the remainder to pay all dues and buy 4 AP's. One stay is usuallly with extended family in a 3 bdrm, and a second stay in a 1 bdrm with the wife and 2 adult special needs children. Disney has been great for them!

685 points here, spread among VGC, VGF and BWV. Too many points for just the two of us, but we rent out some and love the variety and especially being able to get into VGC whenever we want and the access to the Boardwalk view rooms at BWV.

Bought 160 SSR direct a long time ago in 2006. Just bought 160 resale Aulani in 2020 for a total of 320. Plan is to buy more SSR eventually so we can stay in FL 3-4 weeks over winter when we retire w/ going to Aulani via bank/borrow every 3 years. I've read a lot of posts on here that DVC is a big part of a lot of DIS'ers retirement planning also.

Teach me. That’s roughly 11k in dues. Can you show math as to how this works? Two trips, 4 APs, all dues paid, and rental on the unused? If you teach me I’m in.

Two trips use about 650 points. The 3 bdrm is usually OKW. The 1 bdrm moves around.

So renting 1100 points at $16/pt (probably could get more) is $17,600.

Renewing 4 Sorcerer AP's is about $3200 and dues are around $12,500. That's $15,700. I think that means I'm up $1900?

That's my math. Maybe I'm wrong, crazy, or both?

ETA: Plus I buy discounted gift cards to pay dues, saving at least 5%, and sometimes upto 16%.

We have 50 direct that we bought about 10 years ago. Its enough for me to take the kids for 4 nights while hubs is deployed or borrow for a full week every other year. Since the kids are starting to lean towards Universal we split our week more often than not.
Presume you have to stay at OKW exact week with only 50 points? Or possibly have luck certain weeks at BWV Std?

Consider me taught. Didn’t realize you can rent for that much. So you can basically make almost $16k off 1100 points. If I bought 1,100 it would be $137,000 roughly. Takes 7 years average to double an investment. So it’s a tiny loss compared to investing but once you subtract what I’d spend on passes and dues it’s probably a break even. Thanks

Just keep in mind that while our contracts allow us to rent out reservations, It does not include what DVC would classify as commercial purposes.

Right now, it appears that the trigger is 20 or more reservations within a rolling 12 month period, especially in the name of lots of other guests.

DVC can certainly adjust what they define as “for commercial purposes”.

So I would caution people buying with the express purpose of renting all the time as things could change down the line

Was curious as to the spread. Was thinking of buying more and wanted to see if I'm the only lunatic :-) (as if I don't know the answer to that)
You will see you can never have enough DVC points. Member since 1996, been adding points for years and still wish I had more. Best investment I ever made.

As of earlier this week, we owned only 325 points at Saratoga for the last 15 years with absolutely no regrets. After watching this thread and others, we bought 200 more this week at VGF at $185/point after using the current discounts including cruising on the Wish discounts. I must be crazy as we will soon be retired, but we think it will be a great way to get the family together at least annually.
