I just uploaded my pictures from our vacation last week in the world and I've spend the last 2 hours renaming the pics, but I'm only up to #434. I took over 1600 pics in one week!!!

It really comes down to how many are keepers. For a week cruise I took 1400 pictures. However, once I eliminated duplicates I was at 900 and only a handful are ones that really stand out in my mind.

I can understand your pain. On our last trip between my wife and I, we had around 3500. This dropped down to about 3100 after review but this is still a lot. As far as renaming there are a couple of free programs that can "batch" rename. Infranview is one that comes to mind. I actually use lightroom and it can as well but not free. Now I am in the process of editing. Most are minor adjustments which is why I love lightroom. Still a lot of work so I know what you are going through. Good Luck.

Disney Vacation pics by year:

2009 -- ~1,300
2008 -- ~1,500
2007 -- ~1,300
2006 -- ~450
2005 -- ~400
2004 -- ~300
2003 -- ~450

Before our trip in 2003, we had a 35mm film camera, so the # of pics were WAAAAAY lower; just a couple of rolls + a couple of "disposables".

Between 2003 and 2006, we had a 2MP Fuji FinePix with a 256M Xd card.

From 2007 on, we have a 6MP Canon PowerShot S3 with an 8G SDHC card (or multiple 2G SD cards)....

Of course, not all are keepers....

I take an average of 2000 per a one week's trip before I review, delete, and edit. I don't rename unless I edit.

I took about 1000 on my 7 day trip. About 900 are 'keepers' I'd say... but I don't edit that many. I only edit about 150 and put those into albums. There are only so many pictures that I need and while I enjoy the challenge of shooting dark rides and fireworks (and all the other stuff I get while there), I really only want to put into albums the things that mean something to the family. So the other stuff is there so that I can say I did it and have it... but I print and keep only a small fraction of what I take.

I have been taking around 1200 photos per 6-7 day long trip.

I was watching a documentary about a photographer who was doing his best work back in the 20-30's. Forget his name which is bad since I have watched the show TWICE. :confused3 At the time he was more famous the Ansel Adams with whom he was a friend.

He took two years to do 1,200 photos for one assignment which required travel around the west. :scared1: What a SLACKER! 1,200 photos in two years..... :rotfl:

I used to rename my photo files to something meaningful to make searches easier. I don't do that anymore. I don't really search via the file system but use the photo edit software to find the photos I want. Each set of photos goes into a directory such as 10_12WDWTrip. The directory is in another directory that holds all of the photos for a given year. Makes finding things pretty easy.

No more file name changes for me. Takes too much time and it does not help me.

Dan

I take about 200-500 a day at WDW. Fortunately, I'm not very good, so I am able to quickly delete most of them.

I take close to 300-400 a day at Disney.

For those of us still learning how to spell aperature (dang it!) where this is actually an accurate statement...I took just shy of 1700 pictures over 8 days during December's trip. After first review I would guess that I'll 'keep' about 1,000 of them (I may show a few dozen around here when I feel brave). And about 200 of them probably shouldn't be counted anyway - I was experimenting with continuous shooting mode during the Indy Show - I got a decent sequence of the truck explosion/flip but otherwise just a bunch of 'dupes' basically.

I suspect if I had been thinking more and pressing the shutter button less I would have ended up with the same number of keepers and more shots that I would be willing to show here ;)

If shooting only RAW (though I switch to JPEG for most fireworks just to save processing time and keep the camera from getting stuck thinking and making me miss a shot...) I have enough card space to take around 2,000 photos right now, though of course many won't be kept when I get home.

I've been averaging around 2000 for a 6 day trip. I always come home thinking "why didn't I take this shot??or that shot??" So I probably need to either up my total...or start concentrating on the 'little' things. Seroiusly how many photos of the Castle and SE do I REALLY need??

Just came back from spending Christmas at Disney, My first trip with a DSLR Canon XSI. I took 1082 pics for the 5 days we were there Dec 24-30.
Such a magical time for pics.

On our 8 day trip I took ~4500 (was sick one day and probably took about 30 pics that day).

The number of shots I take of something varies enormously based on the type of shooting that I'm doing. If I'm trying to capture a nice landscape shot of the Victoria gardens outside of Canada, I'll take a lot of time trying to get the shot just right and I'll take very few shots. Taking extra shots is a waste of time unless you are truly doing something different for each shot.

When I take posed people shots, I usually fire off a quick burst for each shot that I want. I do this to deal with blinks, glance-aways, etc. I want extra shots so that I have a better chance of having one where everyone is looking at the camera.

When I take dark ride shots, I firing shots off like a madman. You don't have much time to set up a shot. Getting focus right is hard. It's a low keeper situation, so I take a lot more shots knowing that I'm only going to have a few successful shots.

So how many shots do I take? It depends on what I'm shooting.

On our trip in December, I think I took about 1,500. A lot of these were duplicates since I shot a lot of things like dark rides, the Finding Nemo show, etc. and just shot as much as I could in hopes of getting as many keepers as possible. I'm sure at least 500 were dark rides/shows.

See I guess I am the outsider here I dont shoot while on rides (don't do the rides not my thing) and most trips are solo so dont have to be taking family snapshots do my trips usually average between 400-800 shots(first year with the DSLR for the 800) so I take it I am just strange :thumbsup2
