How many of you keep your kids out of school

I don't have kids now, but if I did, I would have NO problem pulling my kids out of school to go to Disney....if your schools are like the ones in WV...they will learn more at Disney than they would during that one week of school.

It is more important because their dad will be home from deployment....I say take them and if their teachers have a problem with it.....tell them to kiss your butt!!!!

Have a very magical time! :cheer2:

OP- we are in a very similar situation. My DH is also deployed, and comes home fairly soon for R&R. My kids haven't seen their daddy in 6 months. I will have no hesitation to pull them out of school for a few days so we can go on a Disney vacation while he is home. My kids are in kindergarten & 2nd grade. Their teachers all know what our situation is, so I think they will all be supportive of our decision to pull them out. However, even if they weren't, I would tell them to KISS IT and go on my vacation anyhow! :earboy2:

Hahahaha :rotfl: Hope you all enjoy your vacation.

I have no young kids to keep out sorry. :Pinkbounc

I have two boys in the 5th and 1st grades and plan to take them out of school the week after April vaca this year. They attend a Charter School which means longer days and heavier workloads and they seem to manage fine. I have already spoken w/ their teachers and they will prepare a package for them to take on our trip and are fine w/ it. I did this last year as well and had no problems. We can't wait, April 15th-28th!!

I am a 7th and 8th grade English teacher and have a son in the third grade. We started going to Disney when he was three, and we try to go sometime between Sept. and Dec. :earboy2: I have no problem with taking my son out for family time, and I have no problem with other parents doing the same thing. :cool1: I try to avoid either of us being out when we are getting down to crunch time for TCAP tests (March/April and January for the Writing Assessment). I always get his work from his teachers. We usually try to go at a time when we have a one day break or try to make it where we are missing only 3 days of school (this is as much for me as for him :rolleyes1 ). Luckily, my son has always had teachers who have said "Go and have a great time and don't worry!" We also have a great principal and asst. principal who understand family/teacher sanity time! We have also dealt with the deployment situation, both personally and at my school. I had several students who had parents in Iraq, and I told them to take off to stay with their parent when he/she came in. My husband's best friend (who is married to my best friend) was in Iraq, and you better believe my son and I took some days off when he came home!! Go and have a great time! If any teacher doesn't understand your situation, they need to realize that there are a few things more important than school!!!!! :jumping1:

We went in Sept, 3-4 wks after school had started, and pulled DS out of school for 1 week. The teacher gave us all his work one week before we left and he turned it in the Friday before we left. He also took 2 spelling tests that Friday (he made a 100 on both of them). We had a wonderful week not having to worry about school work getting done.
We are also pulling him out in March for 3 days. A couple of days are not going to hurt if anything they may help by getting to spend some quality time with their dad.

You live once, yes education is important, but so is family. Sometimes the best lessons learned don't come from books! We have done it before, and all was fine. GO and have a great time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wave2:

We used to always go to Disney the week on Thanksgiving missing 3 days of school. At that time the school would let you take your homework with you and not get a penalty. Now however it is considered an unexcused absence and you cannot make up the work.

We're just starting to plan for a trip next February where they'll miss 4.5 days and I don't think it will be a problem. Haven't talked to the school, but they'll be in 2nd and 3rd grades and I think the educational value of the trip together with the family experiences will more than make up for time missed from the classroom.

1st grade teacher here....I say "go for it".

Missing 3 or 4 days is practically nothing...kids miss 3 days at a time often. (My DS7 is missing 3 days this week due to illness).

I'm taking DD11 (7th grade) & DS7 (2nd grade) out for a week in January & again for a week in May to go to DisneyWorld.

They are only young once.
School will still be there when we get back.

Have a great time!

My dd's are in 8th and 1st grades, we took our kids out for a week in December and will again May '07!! No problems at all, I just got their work in advance and they had it done when we returned. And all of the teachers were fine with it.

When school is in session WDW has lower crowds so we will most likely always during the school year.

Have fun!!!

I say go for it!! I have always taken my kids out of school. In 2004 it was my DS senior year of hs and my DD was in 6th grade. As long as they make up their work I don't think it's a big deal. Besides, kids are only young once and I believe in making magical memories when ever you can. They only stay young for a short time. It was really hard going this year without DS, I can't believe he's in college. I wish I had started going to Disney when he was younger. He was 8 when we first started going. But at least we have wonderful memories. And we are planning a Star Wars weekend when he is on summer break from college. So we get another trip!!!!

Besides in your situation you really have to make the most of it!!! Good luck, have tons of fun and make loads of magical memories!!!!

We go on a family vacation every year in oct. I have 4 kids and we are military also. the kids are out of school for 1-2 weeks. That is the best time for us to go because everything is so much cheaper outherwise we could not afford to go on vacation. The schools have never given us any problems. we just get all of the school work and they do it on the plane. My kids are 8, 12, 13, and 16. so i say GO FOR IT!!!!!! it's great to have that family bonding time. Have fun :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsboy:

In your situation I would pull them out of school without hesitation. Especially since it winds up only being 3 days. Your family needs this. I wouldn't blink an eye. Good luck! You deserve this vacation and I hope it is magical in every way.

We generally travel during school time as well. My DD gets A's, so I have little hesitation about doing so. We like to travel with the crowds are thinner.

My DH is fulltime military and I know that if he were deployed, we wouldn't hesitate to take some family time upon his return - so go for it :earsboy:

I didn't read all the other post, but I am a military wife, too. My husband is in Korea and we are going in December when we move to Tampa. If I was in your shoes, YES, YES, YES!!!!! If your kids are like mine, they are going to need that time with Dad. I know you have been under a TON of stress, and I'm sure your whole family could use a vacation.
I hope you have a great time! And I'm with you, I'm taking this time apart to plan. It makes those hard days a little bit better.
Enjoy yourself!
:cool1:

allboyz .... DH came home last year in Jan. ..... take them out of school. We will never regret it. It was such a great time for DH and kids to regroup and be together. What a more magicial place to be for that!
Check out SOG for the R & R plan. Not exactly ALL the magic you would get at other resorts on property but magic enough just being a family again! Not to mention it fits the budget! :)
Have a blast!
