How many of you keep your kids out of school

I feel very strongly that family time is important, and that much can be learned from travel. My husband and I are both in education, and we have allowed our son to take a few days off to go with his uncle's family on trips that he would not be able to experience otherwise. He did this several years. Now he is in high school, and it is much more difficult because of workload and commitment to extra-curricular activities.

Some schools have stricter policies regarding taking vacation, especially for junior high and high school, but realize that some of this stems from the newer, stricter government policies, such as No Child Left Behind.

I wish I could take a vacation during a less expensive, less crowded time. Be happy you have this opportunity. And thank you to your husband, for his service to our country. I appreciate it. Enjoy your vacation.

We used to take our children out a few days here or there to match up to long weekends for vacations. That was when they were younger though, now that they are both older and in tougher grades we try not to do that. We probably still would if it was one or two days but not longer. And with the stricter policies on absentees and tardies it's hard to get that by administration without the old "truancy" letter LOL

We are going from 11/26 to 12/6 and my 2 ds will be missing school. One will be in K and one in grade 3. I will not let school control when we do things as a family and I think they are in school too much as it is anyway! They will have any work they would miss with them anyway!

Our DD(9) was out of school for 3 days last year when we went to Disney, she was in 2nd grade then so she had some work to do while we were gone but mainly she was required to keep a journal. This year she will miss a week at the beginning of May to go. This year she has so much homework and many different projects and reports, so I plan on going to the teachers a few weeks before and see if she can work on the homework and in-class assignments before we leave. She is a straight A student but I can see the work loads getting larger and larger, so this may be our last year to take her out of school. Our school is very good about family vacations during the school year, it is limited to a week which is fine by me.

So I say go for it, you really shouldn't have a problem especially with your circumstances for taking the trip during the school year.

Do I keep my kid out of school for a WDW trip? Ummm, yup, I'm guilty and SHE's the teacher! LOL Last year I took my DD and her two DDs (8 + 12) to WDW for a week, my treat. We did it during Jersey Week, so that they only missed three days of school. DD told the principal in September, and she lined up her substitute well in advance. Even her students knew where she was going. LOL When she got back to the classroom, they spent one entire period discussing all things WDW!

We always take our kids out. For at least a week. We tell the teacher in plenty of time. So they either get thier work,or they come up with a project like a journal that they have to keep on there trip. Its a chance of a life time and as a former Air Force wife they need that time with dad. Good luck and God Bless. Tell your Husband Thank you :thumbsup2

I think family vacation time is very important.I took my kids out of school for a week to go to WDW.My daughters teacher agreed with me about taking them on vacation whatever time of the year it is. Spending time together is very important so do it whenever you can even during school season. :thumbsup2 ::yes::

We do all of our trips during school time. Going when school is out and crowded just doesn't fit what we're looking for in a vacation. We got the end of Sept/beginning of Oct when there are barely any lines. My son was taken out of school for 6 days last year (kindergarten) and will be out for 5 days this coming Sept (2nd grade). I plan on always going at this time of year unless grades become a problem. If that's the case we'll plan our trips when the kids have a long weekend or something and they'll only miss 2 or 3 days. My daughter is only 2 so I don't have to worry about her missing too much school YET. :teeth: I think we all have to do what is best for our family/situation.

I so get that I am late for the dance here lol but......it is so important for a child to do well in school. That having been said, we are here on earth for such a short time and unless you are truly doing your child a disservice by keeping them out of school, you need to make memories. My son is 16, we don't have many more chances for him to just be with his family (although he says as long as we are taking him to Disney and he's not paying....he's there lol) Take you kids to WDW, love them and let them love the two of you for making their lives special.

Have a magical day,
Anna

PS Thank your husband, for me, for the service he is doing for all of us. Thank you for being there for him so he can help us.
