It's better to have too much memory than not enough. Remember, memory cards are cheap everywhere except WDW. ;)

I definately recommend multiple backups. I went down this summer with 16 gb of memory...used it all. Each night I would download all pics to my laptop, and then burn them to a CD. I also never deleted the pics off the memory cards. This way I had the pics stored in 3 places. When I got home, it was easy to transfer all the pics off the memory cards to my desktop.

Well, we took about 1900 or so pictures, and I think we had two 2GB cards?

Sweet deal. I was planning on picking up a 4GB before our next trip now that my camera has updated firmware that will accept the SDHC cards. Getting 3 of them for that cheap PLUS the rebate Visa cards is too good of a deal to pass up.

I'll have GB's coming out the wazoo! :)

On a recent trip I brought along enough memory cards for 500 pictures per day. I averaged something like 300 to 400 shots per day. Of course some of the shots didn't come out but I didn't have time to go through them and erase the bad ones until after I got home.

Beware of buying more memory cards especially from small stores abroad. I observed my brother, who was on the same tour, buying a memory card and he had the foresight to try it out at the store and he went through half a dozen cards from the store stock in front of the sales clerk before he got a card that worked!

OT but will use up card memory: Whenever you take a zoomed (or telephoto) shot, consider taking another shot immediately, of the same subject but without the zoom. This will give you a better recollection of where you took the shot.

.....
I shot just over 8000 photo's in 15 days...
Maybe im just a freak!!

Yer not a freak! Yer my IDOL!

Ahem, back on topic...

When we went for 4 days back in April, I planned on AT LEAST 1g per day. I have a 7mp camera, and when set to it's 'best' setting, I took about 335 photos before the card was full.

If you aren't a photo junkie in 'real life', 1g per day will be fine, and you could probably roll the card over to the next day. Personally, I decided to have ONE card for each day, both for the Orginization Factor (I know that this card was Tuesday, and we went to Animal Kingdom and these places) and for the Just in Case factor (oh, crap, the card is dead--well, at least I only lost *these* photos). I took 2g to Epcot, 2g to MK, 1g to Animal Kingdom, off property dinner AND DTD and 1g to DHS. It worked out just fine.

But again--it never hurts to have extra! Even though I only USED 6g, I BROUGHT 9g in my bag (3 1g cards were never used, but it was nice to know that they were there!).

Check out some of the websites mentioned on this thread (newegg.com, buy.com, amazon.com)--you will find some great deals. (Sign up for Buy's daily email for great deals too). Brick & Mortar stores don't do heavy traffic in small goods like memory cards so there is no reason for them to discount them. If a newbie buys a digital camera, they won't know that the prices for the cards are higher than average. Even worse than Walmart though, are CAMERA STORES! I saw a store selling a 1g card for $69.99! Like everything else, you have to shop around.

Happy hunting!

Knowing that everyone has an opinion like other things, I have a word of caution for you. I see that many people are looking for deals on memory cards and they are cheap today compared to several years ago.

Always looking for a deal, I went to a site mentioned on this thread and found an 8gb cf memory card for only 22.95. It said it was rated for 10,000 uses, but offered no specific warranty. Now am I going to go to WDW or a cruise or a wedding and depend on that card to hold those special once of a lifetime. NEVER!!

I would never attempt to tell anyone to buy or not to buy anything when it is their final decision, but I have never had a card from a major supplier go bad on me. I have lost some pictures to corruption, but they were caused by me, and I was able to recover all but one of them. I know some of you will be quick to share that card that died on you.

I just am not willing to let my pictures be trusted to a $20.00 card when the quality cards sell for three times that.

I am going on the Disney Cruise the first week of September. I shoot in 14 bit raw format. I am taking 4, 4gb cards, 2 2gb cards and 1 8gb card. I am planning on downloading them to a laptop, a wolverine photo drive, and burning them to DVD's as well. I will use a 30gb ipod as an emergency backup as well. My photos are 15-20mb in size each.

Was the 8G card you saw for $22 on the site a SanDisk? I'm just wondering since it was the SanDisk 4G HC cards that were offering the rebate, and those were $32. I've been using SanDisk for years and haven't had any problems.

a Wolverine photo drive
I got one of those things too (a different brand) because I didn't want to bring a laptop. You stick the memory card into the thing (it's about the size of a digital camera), push a button, and it copies the contents of the memory card onto a built in backup drive. I kept all the pictures on the memory cards too so I would have at least two copies at all times. Of course this meant I needed enough memory cards to cover the entire trip without overwriting any of them.

If anyone is interested in going the Wolverine flash drive route, there is a $40 rebate going on at the moment at B&H until 08-18-08:

I've been buying memory cards the past couple days, and now have a new one for each day of my trip. I spent around $50 on nine 1 and 2 GB memory cards, which I think was on the cheap side, since they averaged out to just over $5 a card.
