How Many Hours do You Really Work?

I'm contracted to work 30 hours per week, no set schedule, supposed to be no more than two evenings per week. (I'm in early childhood, working with families in their homes.) In reality I work closer to 40-45 and some weeks, 50 hours and it's a giant struggle to keep the evenings to two per week. (Although I try very hard as that infringes into my own family time.) There is no overtime pay, I'm salaried. Because of the nature of my job there is always, ALWAYS work to be done.

I'm a college professor so my schedule varies by what classes I'm teaching. Generally, though, I work 8-4:30 MWF and 7:30-5:30 T/Th. I eat lunch at my desk and always have more work than I can finish. That's more than 40 hours a week, but it's not difficult for me to take time off for a sick child, for example, and that may happen once in a semester or so.

When I worked there was no down time. No OT allowed. I had to get stuff done in 8 hours. There were days I thought I would lose my mind.

I don't have a "set schedule" for my job. I drive a school bus (well actually this year, so I punch the clock at 6:15am every morning and get back to the base around 9:30am (depends on traffic, whether or not I stop for a bathroom break or not, etc) Sometimes it's earlier, sometimes later. Then every afternoon I punch the clock at 1:10 and get back around 4:15-4:30 (again, depends on traffic, etc) But then every Wednesday, my student has a half day and since her school is 1hr 20mins away, my boss let's me stay up in that area. So I'm on the clock from 6:15am to about 2:30pm. During the time she's in school I have free reign to go wherever I want. Shopping, out to lunch, sleep in my van...LOL

So basically, each morning and each afternoon I punch in at the same time, but getting back is always a different time. But I usually average 34-35 hrs a week and all of it (except Wednesdays ;)) is all "work time" since I'm on the road. We don't get a scheduled lunch since we're at home during lunch and off the clock.

I'm scheduled 8-5 but end up working at least 7-5 most days (joy of being salaried).

I'm swamped first two weeks of the month closing the books, however I could work 20 hours the last two weeks and get everything finished.

My position is 40 hours per week. I average a 9 hour day most days (not counting lunch) so I do a 45 hour week most weeks.
