Before our kids, we were there from rope drop to park closing. Our DD(5) requires a lot less sleep than our DS(3). Both of our kids are up at sunrise, so we are still there for the rope dropping. On our trip in April, one of us left the park with DS so that he could nap. If our DD left the park it was so she could spend some time in the pool.
The first night we were at Disney, she finally fell asleep around 11 and woke up at 1am to ask if it was time to get up and go to the parks. She was back up at 4am and finally at 6:30. I felt like she was one of the kids in the Disney commercial - "I'm too excited to sleep" The day we stayed for Wishes, we made her go back to the room and lay down for a nap.
I agree with the OP that if the parks are open, we are there. Disney and relaxing just don't seem to fit together.
