I think maybe I am an idealist, but I really don't want someone that rich (be it from whatever party) who is so out of touch with the regular person to be president.
Do they know how much a gallon of gas or milk costs? Or daycare? Or how much the average American makes in relation to how much it costs to fill a gas tank? You can still be rich and know these things, I suppose. But if you don't know how many homes you own, would you?
When was the last time that we had a president who wasn't (a) rich, (b) part of the establishment, (c) out of touch with the "regular folks", or (d) someone who became part of the established elite after growing up poor?
Obama - grew up poor, went to Columbia University and Harvard Law (and was, IIRC, EIC of the Harvard Law Review)
McCain - USNA graduate, son (and grandson) of four-star US Navy admirals
Bush II - son of a President, rich family, Yale and Harvard Biz grad, etc.
Clinton - grew up poor, went to Georgetown for college, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and Yale Law School.
Bush I - another Yalie, same elitist issues as Bush II
Reagan - Grad of Eureka College, B-movie star (so far the least elitist of the crowd)
Carter - USNA graduate, peanut farmer and business owner in Georgia before politics.
So, of all the presidents since the late 1970s, only good old Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan are the presidents with connections to the "common folk" that aren't laughable, and even these guys weren't exactly middle-class folks.
