How many gigs do you take?

Our trip is in a few weeks and I will not be taking a laptop (it died). I have a 4gb card as well as 8gb card and I shoot fully in raw. Also keep in mind, it is the babies first trip...

Opinions on how much more I will need to take with me?

Let's put it this way: I just got back from a week at the world this past Saturday and I took 1900 pictures, almost 100% in RAW. The only thing I shot in JPEG was the daytime parade at MK and then the fireworks shows. That took up 16 Gb. So..... that kind of gives you an idea where I stood. Also, what MP is your camera? That will make a difference. My camera was around 6.1. Hope that helps!! :thumbsup2

On my last trip with my D50 and shooting all my images in RAW (2900 when all was said and done) I brought with me 6 2GB cards and 2 of them I had to reformat to use again. Lucikly I was able to download 2 cards to the laptop to free up space. I would have used larger cards, but 2GB is the max size for that camera.

When ever our next trip comes I can't imagine how much space I'll need for my D300. I get about 550 on an 8GB card in 12-bit RAW.

In the end it will depend on how long your trip is, how big the average file is and how many pics you think you'll take. What ever that number comes to figure out how many cards you'll need, then bring at least 2 more above that. Your better off having empty cards at the end of the trip than needing to go though hundreds if not thousands of images to try and free up space with 2 days left in your trip. Each of my last 2 trips I took about 340 images /day.

One other solution I thought of that may be easier if you're not wanting to buy more memory cards is to take your cards to the photo centers and dump them down onto cd. I don't know if they can dump them onto dvd, but who knows. Then again, as I'm typing this, 4-8Gb is a LOT of cds to dump down. But it's up to you. :thumbsup2

Thanks. It is a 12.3 megapixel.

We are going for 4 nights and 5 days. We'll be seeing MVMCP, Osborne Lights, 3 Character Meals, and going to see the large Gingerbread house at the GF. Those are just some of the main things.

I think I had 20 gig worth of cards with me on our last trip and I had to transfer some photos to DVD and reformat a few cards.

The CD option at the photo center will be very expensive! It used to be $14 for one CD. That is only 700 mb. I burned something like 10 DVDs with the unedited RAW files from our last trip.

Memory cards are cheap. Take plenty!

Thank you. I was just trying to figure this out... I won't go on with the chicken scratch all over the back of an envelope but I think I'll take about 28 gigs. I think I'll get 2 more 8gb cards for my digital camera, and then use my 4 gig card for my point and shoot that I use for video.

Lots of people (myself included) would probably recommend getting more memory cards, smaller in size (like maybe 4gb)...rather than the biggest ones you can find. This way if for some reason something is wrong with a memory card, you lose it, you drop it and damage it, at least you are losing a smaller portion of your vacation pictures. Chances are...this won't happen, but just to be on the safe side you might want to consider it.

I have 22mb for our 7 day 09 Disney trip and my camera is 10.2 mpxl. Based on a recent trip to the zoo, I used about 5gb shooting in raw and that was only for a few hours..so I might have to look out for some good Black Friday deals and purchase another couple 2's or 4's just to be safe.

Good luck and enjoy the trip!!

On our trip this past Sept. I took 2x 4GB and 3x 2GB and ended up having to download the pics off of one of the 4GB cards. So I used 18GB total, that was shooting in RAW with a Canon Rebel XSi.
