Hello --

Am planning to take my son on his first visit to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure next August, as well as a return visit to WDW. We would stay at a Universal hotel during our Universal visit and then move to the Polynesian for our WDW visit (or vice versa). We have been to WDW three times. He and I both agree we could stay there . . . well, indefinitely. I'm wondering how many days we should allot to visiting Universal/Islands of Adventure? Never having been, I have no idea how much stuff there is to do and how long it will take.

FYI, he will be ten years old. He can't do big roller coasters because of a balance problem. He loves "boat rides" like Pirates of the Caribbean. I assume Universal/I of A skews more towards roller coasters and less towards the themed but tame stuff? However, he does LOVE Harry Potter and is looking forward to seeing the Wizarding World.

I'm tentatively thinking three days/nights at U/I of A and seven days/nights at WDW. What do you think? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I think that would be fine and you'd have plenty of time to do all the things you want to do.

I can easily spend a week (and have) at US/IOA.

Since you're combining it with WDW I think three days is fine. I would do the US/IOA portion at the end of your trip. We did it the other way around the first time we did a combined trip and my kids got spoiled with the unlimited express pass. They did nothing but complain about the lines at WDW (even though they weren't bad at all - longest one was about 20 min) when we did the US/IOA portion first.
