How many cameras do you own?

I have a Canon S2, but sometimes I feel like it's too complicated to take somewhere just to get a few casual shots. As a result, I often leave the camera behind when I could be taking some great pictures. I wouldn't mind getting a second smaller, simpler camera that I can just slip in my purse once in a while.

Do any of you do that? Do you feel like it's a waste of money?

I do take The 4600 or 5060 when I dont feel like carrying the E-500.

For the times when you just want to take a "few casual shots," I would set the camera on "auto everything" (I think that's the green rectangle?) and take the camera with you. There's nothing worse than being somewhere and missing that great shot because you didn't bring the camera. Then, when you feel like it, you can start changing settings and learning your way around the camera.

An old Rebel (film!) which we are hoping to upgrade this spring to the XTI

and 2 small Canon digitals

And we have been known to take all 3 on long vacations. The Canon A95 is nice for my purse or briefcase.

We have a Kodak P850 which has a great 12x optical zoom but suffers from terrible shutter lag. I have a little Canon 800IS which I keep in my purse nearly all the time and Im about to buy a DSLR - probably a Canon 30D, but the little Canon will also stay with me. DH will carry the Kodak if we are going on vacation.

I can definately see the appeal of keeping a small camera handy. I recently took hundreds of shots at WDW because my Canon was always ready to hand - pictures of meals we ate, little details on rides and in the theming plus expressions on the kids faces when they saw something special.

There is a place for having a good quality, larger build camera with a bigger zoom and some manual features, but there is also most definately a place as well for a small compact - and they are so well made now, you can get stunning results with them!

I have a Canon S3 which I'm still learning to use to its fullest, and two HP point and shoot cameras, one of which I keep in my pocketbook at all times so as not to miss anything.

I'm thinking of buying another small point and shoot only because the newer HP eats up batteries like you wouldn't believe (after just 8 or so shots with flash) and the old one's shutter sticks closed (though I really love that camera).

I went skiiing last week and brought both the S3 and the HP on the slopes with me. I was so looking forward to getting some nice shots.

Well aside from nearly killing myself when my camera bag got caught in the ski lift, I ended up mostly using the newer HP because, ironically, the fresh S3 batteries died (I think because I left it in the car overnight and it got very cold in the negative digits) and I didn't use the flash on the HP so it was ok. So I ultimately was able to capture some memories of the day, but not in the way I wanted to.

It feels like I can't win for losing.

i have a canon rebel xt and rebel film (2000 maybe not really sure what the number is) i would like to get a s3 for hubby (or something comparable) as soon as i stop buying stuff for my xt( like that will ever happen ) , daughter (who lives with us) has a kodak easy share 4 mp

And I still have my Kodak DX6490 which I told DH I was going to sell to help pay for the A610. Well, that was last spring and my Kodak is still sitting here collecting dust and since purchasing my A610 I purchased the S3 (we found we missed the zoom of my Kodak while on vacation so I was able to easily justify the S3 purchase ) and then I purchased my first dSLR which I was also able to easily justify. I mean, can't anyone justify a dSLR if they really put their mind to it??

I love the A610 though, if it had more zoom I would prefer it over the S3 since it's more compact.

Man, I really need to learn to work with my camera better, but I can see that none of you are going to tell me a second one is a waste of money.

I've got a couple of good photography books, and I've been through the manual a few times, but I just can't get wonderful things out of my S2.

have you tried using the auto settings? i guess i am a little confused why you think it's more complicated than any other point and shoot. if you set it to auto it should do basically everything and you just aim and click right? did you have a digital p&s before? i do think film to digital is at least a 50 ft leap. are you not happy with the quality of the photos, something about the actual camera action( ie the dials) something else? i don't have that camera but unless you got a bad one, i do see good photos from them on here so maybe it just takes a little practice? i know the dials are set up pretty much the same as my daughter's a610 so i don't know how much simpler that would be on another camera.

Next time we go see Mickey and the gang, I'm guessing Mrs. YEKCIM and I will each carry a D50, and the little YEKCIM-ette will inherit the S5200. The real question is which lens(es) for which park, although I can already see that the 70-300VR is going to be a must for AK, as much as I don't look forward to the extra weight/bulk.

Plus a wheelbarrow full of Maxxum film equipment and some "collectibles".

Nope, if you came here to find people that will tell you not to buy more camera equipment...well, you came to the wrong place!

Between DW and I we have four dSLRs and three P&S digital cameras, but that's over a six year timeframe. Wow, has it really been that long since digital hit the mainstream?

I've been selling my old digital cameras as I get new ones, to help finance the upgrade... so my only digital is my Pentax *ist DL. I previously had a Minolta Z5 (12x, IS, 5mp, was never really happy due to the noise levels) and a Fuji 2800Zoom (6x, 2mp - great camera). I do still have (and sometimes use) my Pentax K1000 35mm, and I recently found what I'm pretty sure is the 35mm I was using before the K1000, which was a basic Kodak PnS.

The wife is on her second digital camera (Canon SD600) and we still have her old one, a Minolta X2 (smallest AA camera available at the time with real zoom), plus her old Canon SLR (a basic manual focus model.) Oh, and there's a 1976 Olympics special camera she picked up from a garage sale a couple years ago, too, but I don't even remember the model off the top of my head.

Somewhere in my parent's house, I think I still have my Kodak Disc camera and even my Kodak instant camera.

I'm not sure yet if I'll keep my DL around when I upgrade to a K10D, which'll hopefully happen this year sometimes... I'm leaning towards keeping it.

really i think that just takes practice...my rebel xt was my first digital camera and i am guessing i had taken close to 5-6000 pics till i started feeling comfortable enough with the camera to start remembering what all i had to do to just take a shot and then be able to think what i wanted to try different( and i still make stupid mistakes at least 20% of the shots i take but i am getting better )...if you have P mode maybe start there to branch out, look at what the shutter and aperture the camera sets are, then maybe try the same shot with a different aperture or shutter and see what happens...naturally don't do this when the shots matter, just go out and play with it...you'll figure it out and till you do just use the auto settings for anything you really want to document. imo reading helps get the principles but doing helps me remember better
