Hi,
I'm trying to figure out the cost of the fencing panels to enclose a 1 acre lot.The panels are 8 feet wide. How many would I need to enclose this land?
I'm just no good at math.
Thanks.
Debbie

It would depend on the length of each side of the enclosure as it may not be a square and then the measurements would be different.

Just as an example a lot 10ft x 10ft would mean 100sq ft and need 40ft of fencing, but a lot 20ft x 5ft also 100sq ft would need 50ft of fencing.

Claire ;)

:confused3 If you have 100lf of fencing. You will need thirteen (13) eight (8') foot long panels. It does not matter how you configure it, it is still 100 lf. You are looking at square feet. You need to look at LF. To enclose an acre of land, you would need approximately 105 panels.

You gave me chills I thought this was an MCAS(Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) Test question!!!! LOL!!!

I think you would need 100. I have an acre of property, it is 200 x 200, but there are 4 sides; so that would be a total of 800 feet.

Please don't forget to include a gate - or gates - , too.

The way my fencing company did it was to include 2 gates for easy access.

Thanks everybody for your replies and good humor. That's why I love the DisBoards.Always so many helpful, funny people.
Well 100-105 panels sounds better than the 150 I came up with to put a privacy fence around the yard.I think it's around $80.00 a panel plus the good ole expensive labor to install the sucker.
I can probably figure another $1200 for installation? Or am I on the low side of that estimate?
Thanks again.
Debbie

Way too low. We are putting in 250 feet of three rail fence. It is costing $4/linear foot to install. That is a 36" hole with 30" of concrete. The total install is 31 sections.

Where I live an acre (43,560 sq feet) lot is 300' by 145'. The amount of fence to cover that with a gap for the double wide driveway (30') is 108 (860 linear feet) sections.

If you pay the same as we are that would be $4320 for installation.

....next question.....

"Train A leaves the station traveling at 30 miles per hour. Two hours later train B leaves the same station travelling in the same direction at 40 miles per hour. How long does it take for train B to catch up...."

Claire is right. It depends on the configuration. An acre is not a linear measurement, it's a measure of area, so in order to answer the OP's question, we'd need to know the length of the perimeter.

If it's a perfect square (approx 210x210), the perimeter would be 840 feet and like FordFamily said, it'd require 105 panels.

But an acre could also be 100x440 feet, in which case the perimeter would be 1,080 feet, and require 135 panels.

Or, as an extreme example, a lot 10 feet by 4,400 feet would also be an acre of land, but would have a perimeter of 8,820 feet and would need 1,102 panels!

And if you enclose a perfect circle, you can get away with 93 panels.;)

An acre is a measure of area. Your fencing needs would be determined by the perimeter of your one acre lot. Could be very different numbers.

If your property is a square or close to it, 108 is a good estimate. (210 feet square is approximately 1 acre. 210*4=840 linear feet for your perimeter = 108 sections of eight feet each.

If your property is a long rectangle, say 100x435, the area would still be one acre. However, the perimeter would be 1070 linear feet (100+435+100+435). This shape would require approximately 134 fence sections.

An irregularly shaped property would require more.

Good luck!

What she said! I was still doing my math while you posted!

An acre was originally defined as the amount of land that one man and one horse could plow in one day.

It's also the exact amount of land, if you're cheap like me, is just enough to say "Yeah, I can mow it myself", but when I get done I say "I gotta get a lawn-care service".

And, I jokingly refer to it as an "ache"r

An acre is 43,560 square feet. If it were a perfect square it would be 208.71 feet on a side. Dividing that by 8 is 26.09 segments per side, or at least 104 full sections plus some fractions.

But if the lot were 100 x 435.6 you would need 55 on each long side and 13 on each short side, for a total of 136 sections.

Claire was looking at square footage... Fence line are per liner foot. Is this the NEW MATH?
