...Does shortening last? Theres no expiration on the can, but I know its been sitting in the cabinet for about a year now. Would you use it? :D

If it is still white and soft, it is usable. If it has started to harden and turn "clear", then I would chuck it and get a new can! I have the same problem, so I started buying the smaller cans. I still don't use it all before it goes bad, but I am throwing away far less!

Katie--

It should still be fine. DH is still using the shortening sticks he bought last year after T-Giving (they were on sale!). DH makes all the pies in our house.

Thanks everyone! :D
I see you all have the same train of though this week. ;) I needed some last year to make cranberry bread and all I could find was a big can of it. I havent used it since. Now Im going through my recipe to see what I need to buy or what I have to make it again. I guess this stuff will work. It is white and soft still.

It does last a long time and usually has a rancid smell when it's gone bad. I've started buying the shortening sticks. They cost a little more but I find them easier to use and store.

Yup, that stuff is so nasty, even the germs won't eat it!
