How long will royal icing last

I have to make some up for gingerbread houses to be decorated with tomorrow evening. If I make it up tonight and put it in the piping bags without cutting off the tip (plastic throw away) and put a rubber band around the top, will it keep without getting hard?

Are you using meringue powder? It will tend to get runny if made ahead. If I need to make it a couple hours ahead I will make it extra stiff to begin with. I would wait until at least tomorrow morning.

According to Alton Brown's recipe, which starts with pasteurized egg whites, you can "Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to 3 days. "

I haven't made it yet though.
