How long to visit NYC?

Well my suggestion is a lifetime. :goodvibes ;)

I'm an awful person to answer that question as the more days the better for me. There is something around every corner.

Heck I've been in Central Park for so many hours over many trips and still have much to see.

Listen, I honestly think the best way to do NYC is just like WDW. Don't try to cram everything in no matter how long you are there. Know that you'll be back and let the day/days carry you wherever they may.

Depends on what you want to see. Will you have children with you? What time of year will you go? Honestly you could fill as many days as you have to spend. A week would be a good start.

How much money do you have? LOL. By that criteria, my plane would land at 10:00 a.m. and I'd be flying out by 2:00 p.m.

That's cute. :rotfl2:

I've done NYC on next to nothing. I've literally gone into the city with a MetroCard, my legs and a twenty. :goodvibes It can be done and it can still be a beautiful trip.

I have not been to NYC yet but when I do go (and I will go eventually) I will stay based on how many nights of Broadway and off Broadway shows I plan to see. The first arrival night doesn't count. So if I plan on seeing 5 shows I will stay 6 nights. You can fill your days with touristy stuff and fill your nights with great shows.

If you can afford the room and food and show tickets etc stay for however many nights you can afford.

I would say if you have smallish kids like under 8 yrs old I would probably stay a lot less time there. trying to keep up with little ones in such a busy big city might be overwhelming and scary.

I have been 2 days, 3 days, and 14 days. I would suggest 6 nights/7 days. There really is that much to see and this will just scratch the surface.

how far away are you? is this a once in a lifetime trip, or is it easy to come and go?

We like to go for long weekend trips, maybe 4 days tops, but we are only a 3-4 hour drive so we can do that whenever we want. we've even done a day trip there with the kids and had a blast. If it was a longer/fly into type of trip, I'd probably go for a week if possible.

At least a year.

It will take more than week to just go completely through The Museum of Natural History. Then there is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

There is much truth to that. NYC is EXPENSIVE - especially lodging.

If you go, you must experience Canal Street.

We went in July during a god-awful heat-wave, so I take that into consideration. We spent 4 days and barely saw anything. We did the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State bldg, the 9-11 Memorial and the Museum of Natural History. We didn't go to any other museums, that's for our next trip. As long as our younger son and daughter-in-law live in NY state, we'll be back. (we saw Rock of Ages, and the Beatles review - the name escapes me)

How long do you suggest for a stay in NYC?

There is NO WAY to answer this question with no more information than that. But I will try anyway. This answer is coming from someone who has visited several times on various budgets and lived there for a couple of years.

We are going in December and bringing 2 kids. We are staying 5 nights, mostly because that is the max we can do with the 2 kids--by then we are ready to come home even if there is still a lot left to do.

In 5 nights you can see a lot--we'll do a museum or something like the Empire State Bldg each morning, afternoons at Central Park, Chinatown, etc., and a show each night (if you want).

We are not big on eating out in New York, but if you are, that can eat up a lot of your budget and your time.

at least a week. I would spend 4-5 of those nights watching a show on Broadway..our last visit, we LOVED Wicked, Warhorse, Phantom, Book of Mormon. Gotta go through Times Square of course, museums you will need a whole month (as someone above mentioned, or did she say years?) Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, 5th Avenue...

I would get a hotel that is nearby, up your budget and then double it. I always tell hubby I would love to live at least 3 months in NYC to see things leisurely...always feel so rushed there..lol He says we would be broke after that...hahahaha

We did a quickly trip last December. Flew in on a Sunday Morning, flew out on Wednesday - later in the day.

We packed a ton of stuff into that amount of time, but sadly did not get to any of the museums. (Monday would have been the day that museums would have fit into our schedule the best, but most museums are closed that day.)

I would loved to have stayed a few days longer...except - by leaving on the Wednesday - we were able to snag return airfare of $67 each, and until that special - hadn't seen any return airfare under $200. and - as this was the week before Christmas - there weren't any cheaper airfares if we would have stayed later. We couldn't go earlier, as DD was pretty insistent that she take "all" her finals as a first semester college freshman.;)

And - the "hindsight" part - our stay was perfect - if we would have come home on Thursday - there was a major snowstorm that would have hosed air traffic the entire day.

So - we need to go back to see some museums!

we are looking to go in May..kidless..for anniversary...but WIth thE $600+ flight & then a cheap hotel @$130 a night & broadway shows @ $100 a pop I'm thinking we are out of our league on this anniversary trip. we could take the kids to Disney @ this rate!
