How long should it take to get "settled in" in a new house

IMH (and oh-so-manly ;) ) opinion, if you don't have a least one box that you haven't unpacked since the last move, you're way too organized.

It seems that I'm a bit more relaxed than some of the DHs here; while there are some things that need to be unpacked and put in an appropriate place (toilet paper, for example) the rest of it can sit in a box until needed....

I am lucky, the last two moves I have done my MIL and mom came and helped me unpack. I was done in about 2 days including pictures hung and china in the cabinet. That was working 3 people from dawn til dusk though.

We closed on April 28th and are far from being unpacked! we've removed wallpaper, painted, put in new fixtures, lighting, appliances, etc. Boxes are everywhere and we are slowly unpacking because we've been so overwhelmed with all the things that have to be sold in a yard sale. I'd be suprised if we are done at the end of next month

Well we are supposed to close tomorrow,so in about six months time I'll let you guys know if we are anywhere near unpacked! :lmao: We moved into this house just for temporary purposes two years ago, and we've never finished unpacking from that move.:) At least now, with buying we'll have more room and storage to unpack everything (hopefully).;) Getting packed up right now is our bugbear. I noticed yesterday that we don't have enough boxes. DH better bring home lots more in the next three days....;)

Well, one move I got everything.. boxes emptied put away, etc moved furniture, BY MYSELF! (no help from DH as he was away on business trip )
in 10 days.

Now, we've been here going on three years and I know there are two boxes in the attic that have never been emptied. They are pictures and such that fit the old house.

I'm such a nut about order that I'd be trying my darndest to get it done quickly.

From dictionary.com:
con·nip·tion Pronunciation Key (k-npshn)
n. Informal

A fit of violent emotion, such as anger or panic. Also called conniption fit.

In other words:
This :furious: or this::scared1: or possibly this:

DH and I closed on our new house April 10th.

We removed wallpaper, wall mounted mirrors, vertical blinds, primed and painted, and replaced some light fixtures before we moved in 4/23.

However, we're been stuck in a MESS since then. We have 2 major projects planned - we are replacing the radiators on the 1st floor with baseboards (it's already baseboards upstairs) and we are pulling up the carpet in dining room, living room, and office (the 3 main rooms downstairs) and refinishing the hardwoods that were underneath. The carpets that were in the rooms were totally stained and unlivable. We couldn't replace the radiators until it got warm enough to be without heat for a week or 2 (DH and his father are doing the work themselves, and DH has absolutely no vacation time since he just started a new job in January). We can't refinish the floors until the radiators are gone since we need to replace a few floor boards where they were. We can't unpack any boxes into those rooms or even really set them up until the floors are done since we have to move everything out again to refinish the floors.

We kept the vertical blinds in most rooms, even though we hate them, but we had to take them down in the dining room and living room to remove wallpaper and paint. We still don't have blinds in those rooms because there are 4 windows that are only 19" wide, and I hate all our options for those windows - we can't afford $200/blind to custom order them, and I hate the thought of aluminum mini blinds cut to size since our cats tend to snap them! We have also not unpacked most of our pantry food items since we are turning a coat closet in the dining room into a pantry, but DH has not installed the shelves yet.

In the midst of all this, we've spent the last 2 weekends helping my parents pack and move into their new house and helping them deal with their mess. It's really slowed us down since we only have the weekends to work.

Our kitchen, bathroom, and upstairs bedrooms are the only rooms that really have any semblance of order. I now understand why people look for homes that are in move in condition! When we moved into our last house (a rental) we were mostly set up within a couple weeks. Hopefully since it's now warm enough DH and his dad will start work on the baseboards this coming weekend. I say congrats to you on all you've been able to get done!

My fiancee and I have had our house since mid-December and we're still settling in. We still have some rooms to paint and some little things to take care of, but it's coming along. I imagine once school is finished (we're both teachers) we'll really start to pick up the pace.

Um.... we've been in our house for, oh, 3 years now or thereabouts...

There are still boxes in our guest room.

:rotfl: Thank you all! I feel so much better now! :)

DH chilled out down finally LOL.

We did manage to finish the office and get all of downstairs "visitor ready" so that feels pretty good :)

Upstairs will be a work in progress but for now it is livable I suppose.

Hope everyone gets settled in soon. :rotfl2:

LuvN~Travel ,I had a tonne of boxes, I would have been glad to share if you were closer lol

We moved here in November and I still have things in boxes, and I have things still in boxes from the time we moved before that!

Yeah I dont why he is stressing out so much, the last time we moved we had boxes in the garage for a long time.

We moved 4 years ago and still have unopened boxes downstairs. Dh is a pack rat extraordinaire! He talks about moving again in a couple of years but I told him not until all the boxes are unpacked and stuff is thrown out! You are doing well. It is nice that your DH has calmed down a bit.

Well I dont know. We've been here 18 months and we're still unpacking and getting settled in.
Granted, 98% of it is done and we havent painted any rooms yet though we do have a lot of shelves and things put up, but no paint yet. We're in no hurry. This was our last move and is going to be our forever home so we've got plenty of time for painting.

:rotfl2: Depends on "settled" -- we have been here for 6 years and we STILL haven't gotten rooms painted. As a matter of fact the only rooms we have painted are the ones no one sees (basically the kids bedrooms -- still have my DD's to go & our master bathroom).

We still have boxes stashed away that we haven't opened either (HMM...maybe time to get rid of those). We had the minor detail of having a newborn when we moved in though plus then adding another one to the family after that (that's the only reason the nursery & boys rooms got painted..we shifted around before the baby got here).

Honestly, it all depends but I think it sounds like you have done fantastic for 3 weeks. :thumbsup2

We moved a lot when DW was in the Army. 3 weeks is about tops. In our house, nobody rested until the house was completely in order. Guess I'll have a conniption with your DH. :)

Also in our house, if you haven't opened something or used it in 6 months or more, you'd better have a really good reason not to get rid of it.

Oh how I would love to do that to my pack rat family. :stir:
DH has crud from his childhood he doesn't use.:rolleyes1

Well luckily, my DH brought home some more today.
However, unluckily, we aren't closing tomorrow. The appraiser found himself in a gray area of appraising, and doesn't have the sense to know how to appraise our house to be. So now we have to find another appraiser. Arrrrrgh!
Well we will be still packing for another week I guess. I just hate that I took these three days off this week, and they won't be used for moving, just packing now.
I really do NOT like people who figure that when they can't figure something out, that no one can figure it out as well! The man took two or three weeks for he realized he couldn't figure it out! Sheesh!
