IE boxes all gone, curtains hung, rooms painted.

We have been here less than 3 weeks and dh is having a kiniption ( sp???) and working himself (and me) to death because he thinks all the boxes should be gone and everything should be in its rightful place. We have painted several rooms including the kitchen which was a huge job. He have hung blinds and curtains, put probably 95% of the boxes away and cleaned most of the garage. There is a huge pile for the garage sale but other than that our keep stuff is either in the hoiuse or in the storage room.

Yes there probably 15 boxes throughout the house that need to be sorted but all the essential stuff is put away. The house is functioning order and we are managing I put a little away each day. Keep in mind we are both working and the kids are still in school.

So should we be done by now?

BTW, if youre on my side (which is we are doing pretty darn good for being here less than 3 weeks) please go easy on him he is stressed enough :)

we have been in our new house since mid- March, and we still have two full rooms of boxes. That includes a bunch of kitchen boxes that are hidden in an upstairs room. We actually we doing pretty well the first week we moved in- I had one of the room completely emptied of boxes, and our closet organized. Then, the saturday after we moved my MIL brought over a ton of boxes that DH had been storing in her basement, so now we are back to square one, and we have not taken the time to unpack anymore.

I think it is okay to not have everything unpacked at this point. However, it is probably not normal to be as disheveled as we are.

We still have boxes from our last move in the basement that haven't been sorted through. Important to know we moved in 12yrs. ago!!!!!

You must be super human :cheer2:

We did do a lot of painting/wallpapering before we moved in as the house was vacant and the seller was kind enough to let us come in to do some things. Ours is an old home so it is always a work in progress.

So from my stand point you guys are great! Please don't kill yourselves!

Peace,
Colleen

we just moved as well, and my dh will be thrilled if i manage to have the 3 car garage cleared enuf in 3 MONTHS to get 1 car in :teeth: but we rented this place for just the purpose of having that 3 car garage as a "staging area" to go through all the boxes and boxes of stuff that we've accumulated over the past 15 years.

if over the course of 3 weeks you've managed to get all the work you've posted done i think you both deserve a big :thumbsup2

greg has all boxes emptied and gone within the first week usually (and often quicker)...it stresses him out to no end to have them there. However, we take a little longer with the painting. Much longer in my book...I'd like to get it done quickly, he wants put it off. lol. Every time we move (we've moved 4x in 4 years) we say we'll close on the new house before closing on the old house so we can get in and paint pre-move, but it never happens.

We thought we had it made this move (moved in november) because the house didn't need paint. however, the previous owner decided to spackle/prime every single nail hole...so instead of a teeny tiny nail hole we have 3"x3" primed spots all over the walls. which we still need to paint...and we moved in november.

it should take one week. anything more and you are a total slacker.

We've been here for 6 years and there are still some things that were never unpacked. My thought is that if we haven't unpacked them yet that we really don't need them. :rotfl2:

My DH would be exactly like your DH--there's a job to do, so it should be done right away. Nevermind everything else that is going on. My philosophy is that the stuff isn't going anywhere and it's not an emergency. Probably a middle ground is good. :teeth:

I think that you've done a great job. Just keep plugging away at the boxes--a little every day and you'll be done in no time.

We closed on this house March 7 and we aren't done. I have curtains to hang in our bedroom. I've painted the living room and the hallway connected to it and leading up the stairs, the kitchen and the master bed w/sitting room. I still have boxes, not alot around the house, but some stuff I just don't know what to do with. We have lots of boxes in the basement, but we had all those shelves in that house in Idaho and I don't here, so that stuff including the books are still in boxes in the basement. I have lots of painting to do including the kids rooms and I do know what I'm going to do in there. But hopefully we have years to get it done! I think you are doing just fine! :thumbsup2

How long should it take? There is no answer for that. That is purely something personal. Although we put up blinds before we moved in.

We moved 1yr and 2 months ago. We have painted nothing, and still have boxes.

It takes us 4 years to get everything together and then we move.:lmao:

We moved Memorial Day Weekend 2005..YUP!!! At the same time DS moved home from college and my other DS has been watching Gram's house for the winter, she returned so DS moved back home.....UGH.....new house, two DS' moving home = ONE BIG MESS!!! We were pretty much settled by July 4th weekend. This included all the pictures on the wall BUT NO CURTAINS. STILL one year later no curtains ANYWHERE. We had ordered and had installed the BALI-FAUX WOOD blinds....sooo nice and they are perfect for now while I decided what I want for curtains. YUP, it is a TASK moving and organizing but YOU WILL DO IT AND YOU WILL GET IT DONE!!! :goodvibes

Thank you all!!!
DH thought he was being totally normal for stressing out about this. I made him read this thread and he said " ok ok I get it"

I dont like having boxes either but come on~! I have been working my tushy off ( I wish ;)) trying to get things settled in here. SO now he said " can we just get the office finished off today?"

So yay, the office is almost done and now I get to go play! :)

LOL

Thank you all :) I feel so much so much better now knowing we're not alone. THis is an older home as well so there is a lot to do! A lot has been updated but there is still a ton that needs to be done. AT least I have my kitchen painted the way I want it for now :) That was a job in itself. I want to get the girls border up and finish the border in the kids' bathroom then I will be happy for a while :) Then I get to start on the landscaping :scared:

Hey Binny - I think you are doing GREAT! But I do understand your husband's frustration and maybe this would help. After our first move, those last "stubborn" boxes were really tough - I moved them to the basement and unpacked them as I could. Calmed down DH (who hates a mess) and I got them unpacked as I could. If you walked into our house, you wouldn't know that we weren't completely unpacked. Everybody was happy!

Could this help you out??

I think it's "caniption". I would think 1-2 months for the critical stuff. The rest...as time allows. :)

I've been working on moving in for 11 years!

and, yes, conniption. :thumbsup2

We will be in our house 4 yrs end of August and I still have boxes in basement that never got unpacked. I am currently in the process of going through them 1 by 1 and ebaying and setting aside for yard sale. Some is going to donation etc. I can't stand the clutter down there anymore. There are alot of boxes down there with kids keepsakes, christmas decorations, etc. But many many boxes to get rid of.

Sounds to me like you are doing darn good.

Just go through a box a day of what's left.

My DH is like that with some stuff. Takes a big project and thinks it all has to get done in one day, and works himself to the point of exhaustion. I break bigger projects down into smaller ones. It takes a little longer maybe, but it gets done without being completely exhausted or disgusted by the end of it.

We are usually unpacked fairly quickly...month or so till the boxes are gone...no more than that. But, we are military, so our time in one location is not as long!

Let's just say DH finished painting the patio cover that was built/installed six months ago this weekend

We have lived here twelve months and still have one bedroom we call "the boneyard" - it has all the boxes and stuff we have yet to find a home.

You guys are doing great, don't put too much pressure on, it is soooooo much work to move!!!

We moved at the end of February and still have a garage full of boxes. We had a very busy spring but have had more time lately to continue unpacking. We had tons more storage at our other house so we will get to it all in due time. One thing that is bugging me is that I haven't hung the first picture yet. I will get to all that since it is now summer and our schedules have calmed down. Don't worry about it. Go at your own pace I say.
