How long should I keep old bills?

I'm doing some cleaning and am finally getting to some containers that have been stored quite a while. How long should I keep old bills, paystubs, cancelled checks, etc? I seem to remember it being 7 years, but does anyone know? What about if the account is no longer an active account?

I have a lot of crap that I could get rid of!
