How long left on passport?

Ok must be mad but I woke up with an idea today that we would take my sister (she's just split from her boyfriend and having a hard time) and DH's brother with us next week on hol!! we haven't told them yet so it's going to be a surprise.

Anyhoo! DH just spoke to his mum and she said she would love him to go but when she just checked his passport is only valid until August, I've checked the official website and it states the passport only needs to be valid until departure but I remember reading somewhere it was 6 months.

Anyone have any experience?

There is a 6 month rule but UK travellers travelling under the visa waiver program(ESTA) are exempt from the 6 month rule.
