How long after a dr. writes a presription do I have to fill it?

Depends on what it is for.

I believe certain meds (like Ritalin) are good for 30 days.

Things like Xanax are good for 6 months. Regular stuff (BP meds, Nexium, etc) good for a year. That has been my experience. Don't know what the rules are.

I think it may depend on what it is for. I know with my birth control it was a few months before I got it filled.

Sorry I can't be more help.

The Rx was written in September.

I believe it's one year. Then when you have it filled, you have one year to have any refills filled. I have often held 'script's for a good six months before filling them. To be sure, just call your pharamcy.

It may vary state to state. Generally I think it is 6 months and then refills within 1year. But scripts written on controlled substance pads may be sooner like 30 days.

When I got the prescription at my checkup, I still had 2 months left on my old one and couldn't fill it yet. When it came time to fill it, I had misplaced it, so my dr's office called in a refill, but only called a partial one in, not the full year. I only have 1 refill left on it. In the meantime, I found the original prescription and wanted to just take that to the pharmacy instead of asking the dr's to call in another partial (which is like pulling cemented teeth to get them to do).

Controlled substances can be as little as 14 days - and refills 3 months..

BC pills - I'd just call the pharmacy and ask..:)

I am a licensed pharmacist and in the 3 states I'm licensed in, non-controlled prescriptions (bc pills) are good from 12months from the date written on the prescription. That being said, the refills indicated on the prescription are also only good from 1 year from the date written, not the date first filled.

That's fine, I just want it to last long enough to get me to my next yearly without having to call my Dr's office to call in another partial prescription.

My doctor prescribed me a puffer in June and I didn't get it until December. It was still good though.
